Nutrisystem? for Teens | Nutrisystem Blog

In the past four decades, obesity rates in the United States have soared in all age groups, including kids and teens. In fact,? more than 23 million children and teenagers in the United States ages 2 to 19 are obese or overweight, a statistic that health and medical experts consider an epidemic.? What is most alarming about the rise in obesity earlier in life, is the impact on long term health and quality of life that these overweight and obese youth will face as adults. ?A few statistics:

  • - Earlier onset of obesity is associated with increased risks of hyperlipidemia, hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, gallbladder disease, sleep disorders, and some forms of cancer.
  • - Diabetes diagnosed before the age of 20 years results in life expectancy 15?27 years shorter than people without the disease.
  • - 30-45% of extremely obese teens have clinical levels of depressive symptoms

?

There are a number of reasons why childhood obesity is on the rise, many of which mirror the causes for adult obesity, however there aren?t many solutions available to address the unique struggles children and teens face when tackling their weight issues. Complicating the issue is the belief that kids ?will grow out of it.? Most often, this is not the case, in fact 80% of children overweight at ages 10 ? 15 were obese at age 25.

Because we know the earlier we all adopt healthy eating and exercise habits, the better. Beginning in September of this year, Nutrisystem now offers a program specifically for teens age 14-17. The program also provides a manual for their families to assist them with their weight loss struggle. The teen program is designed to offer a simple, healthy weight loss approach that provides the nutrition growing bodies need and integrates both the family and the physician to ensure safety and maximize success.
