China starts formal criminal probe into politician Bo Xilai

BEIJING (Reuters) - China moved quickly on Friday to announce it had formally begun a criminal probe into disgraced former senior politician Bo Xilai, hours after expelling him from the largely rubber stamp parliament and so removing his immunity from prosecution.

The announcements pave the way for Bo, once a contender for top leadership in the world's second largest economy, to face trial and likely a long jail sentence on accusations of corruption and abuse of power.

A brief report by the state-run Xinhua news agency said state prosecutors had "decided to put Bo Xilai under investigation for alleged criminal offences".

It added that they had "imposed coercive measures on him in accordance with the law", likely a reference that he was now officially in detention.

Bo's wife, Gu Kailai, and his former police chief, Wang Lijun, have both been jailed over a scandal that stems from the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood while Bo was Communist Party chief of the southwestern city of Chongqing.

The government last month accused Bo of corruption and of bending the law to hush up the murder.

The latest move comes a fortnight before the Communist Party holds a congress, which opens on November 8, that will unveil the country's new central leadership.

Bo, 63, was widely seen as pursuing a powerful spot in the new leadership before his career unraveled after Wang fled to a U.S. consulate for more than 24 hours in February and alleged that Bo's wife had poisoned Heywood.

Bo, a former commerce minister, used his post in Chongqing since 2007 to cast the sprawling, haze-covered municipality into a showcase for his mix of populist policies and bold spending plans that won support from leftists yearning for a charismatic leader.

Xinhua provided no other details, such as what charges Bo may face, saying only that the investigation was under way.

Earlier in the day, Xinhua said the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's parliament, "announced the termination of Bo Xilai's post" as the deputy to the parliament.

As a member of that body he had enjoyed immunity from prosecution.

Before Bo is charged and tried, investigators must first complete an inquiry and indict him, but China's prosecutors and courts come under party control and are unlikely to challenge the accusations.

"THEATRE"

A lawyer for Bo, who has been employed by the family to represent him, said on Thursday he was unable to say whether the government would allow him to represent Bo when the case comes to trial.

"It's theatre," said Nicholas Bequelin, a researcher at Human Rights Watch, a New York-based advocacy group, who spoke before Bo's expulsion and criminal probe were announced.

"The judiciary grinds into action only when the outcome has been determined. There is no indication we will see a genuine trial because Bo knows too much."

An official account of Wang's trial in September said Wang fled to the U.S. consulate in Chengdu, southwest China, after Bo beat him and stripped him of his police job following Wang's decision to confront Bo with the murder allegations against Gu.

Wang had spearheaded Bo's controversial campaign against organized crime, a prominent plank in Bo's barely concealed campaign to join the topmost ranks of the Communist Party.

Bo was dismissed from his Chongqing post in March, and suspended from the party's top ranks in April, when his wife was named as an official suspect in the murder in November of Heywood, a long-time friend of the couple who also helped their son Bo Guagua settle into study in Britain.

Bo has disappeared from public view since he was dismissed and has not had a chance to respond publicly to the accusations against him.

The removal of Bo has disrupted the Communist Party's usually secretive and carefully choreographed process of settling on a new central leadership.

Sharply dressed and courting publicity, Bo stood out in a party of stolid conformists, and he promoted Chongqing as a bold egalitarian alternative to China's current pattern of growth.

But Bo's promotion of "red" culture inspired by Mao Zedong's era and his campaign-style crackdown on crime prompted fears that he was rekindling some of the arbitrary lawlessness of the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s - a criticism that Premier Wen Jiabao spelled out before the public in mid-March.

Family Home and Life: Family Harvest Day 2012

We had a wonderful time at our Family Harvest Day and had a smaller crowd than last year. We kicked off the day with family group photos on the straw bales set up for this purpose. We are short on boys in our family but the girls make up for it with silliness and rough housing! No get together is ever complete with out a wrestling match with Papa :)?

Then it was on to the fun and games! First we had a sack race that I completely forgot to?photograph.? After a short break we had a three legged race with a child paired up with an adult. Even the adults had fun with this one and I think we had three or four races before moving on to the next activity.?Then we made Scarecrow faces on paper plates all voting to forgo the full size?Scarecrows?we usually make.
All the kids had decorated a pumpkin to bring and they had a parade around the yard and through the house while carrying and displaying their pumpkins. (I only took the one small pic of that above).?Look at these fancy pumpkins! The middle one is Cinderellas Coach, she is inside. The one on the end is Dr. Pumpkin that is happy to make house calls. Great job!?

After this we enjoyed a home cooked pot luck meal that celebrated the fall harvest time. I used the dishes and flatware I purchased last year in keeping with a 'out in the country, down on grandma's farm' feel I was attempting to achieve inside a big city limits :)
There was plenty for the kids to do with a huge yard to run in, a trampoline to jump on, and a large swing set complete with a slide and fort. The kids all the way down to the two year old had an archery lessons using the straw bales for their targets. The oldest girl there, is a very good shot. The day ended with a swim in the pool, yes it was warm enough here for that!?

What ?a lovely, fun and relaxing time to visit and play; while celebrating the Harvest season and the blessings we all enjoy through out the year. And we didn't need a theme park or carnival; we?accomplished?it all the backyard with our family. We made some wonderful memories that day!?

If you would like to read about another grandmother who puts on a Holiday gathering for her family that is out of this world wonderful, then head over to What Happens At Grandma's. ?I may be linking this post at these link parties.?

Looking for a long term RP partner

Okay, so~

I'm fairly new to this site, and I apologize if I don't understand a lot of the terms everyone is listing out. I honestly don't understand what people are calling what, nowadays. Makes me feel so old. I'm not at all, new to roleplay. I've actually been RPing for a long time. Over ten years, in fact. But I live under a rock in every possible way.

Anyways.

I've actually taken a look around and I've come to find that I really do like this site. It seems so nice. I would love for someone to direct me to some good group RPs, even. I'm kind of shy and a little afraid to really.... jump into just anything. I know thats not a very good excuse. xD Regardless, that isn't actually important or my reason for making this topic.

Ultimately, I am looking for an RP partner for a more 'one on one' roleplay. However, not just /any/ RP partner. I want a good friend that I can easily share ideas with and talk to often. Someone I wouldn't be afraid to talk to. It actually takes me a while to warm up to new people, but I decided to give this site a try and see if I can find the right person, here.

The QUALITIES I'm looking for:

Someone who can actually dedicate some time to this. I have about 0% of a life, seriously. I do go to school and work, but I am generally always on the computer all day long. So I would love for someone who is pretty much, a loser - just like me. :I

Someone who RPs well. I am lenient on this matter. I don't expect everyone to have amazing skills. I know that there are plenty of people out there, who are far better than me in RP. I just ask that you are actually able to ENGAGE me in the RP. That the RP you give to me, is deep and moving. Not.. I guess I would say - plastic. I like to feel emotionally attached to my RPs in a way that I could actually CRY over them. To me, its like reading a really good book or watching a really good movie. This is something I like. I should also make a point that I want quality over quantity, in that, novella or anywhere near it, is not nessecary. Can I do so? Yes, I have surprisingly ungodly RP skills~ ( Probably because I have no life, and this is all I ever do ).

Someone who is of 'like-mind' with me. And I guess this goes hand - in - hand with being a friend. Because I honestly don't want to RP with someone I think, would be silently judging me on the other side of the screen. I would love someone who I can warm up to and not be afraid to unleash the tidal wave of creativity in my head.

-----

WITH that said, let me also explain that I am looking for someone that is into 'yaoi'. Or rather, guy on guy.

I realize this is not popular to a lot of people, which has made it very hard to find people actually interested in RPing. However, I am not typically seeking out yaoi. It's just the only 'romance' I am comfortable doing, over roleplay. I am 100% willing to start a roleplay with anyone, excluding romance.

The characters I would want to offer, are very 'complex'. I like using good storylines. I very much, enjoy strong characters with lots of 'personality'. If anyones seen the series 'Firefly' - these are the types of characters I like seeing. I haven't really uploaded any of my characters yet, but I will do so, depending on interest to my query.. I also like long term RPs. Ones with a good plot and plenty of freedom. For me, this means that the RP can take many different turns - in that, it isn't completely restricted to finish one certain goal that would end the entire roleplay. I like for things to be able to continue~

Now, I assure you, I am a very good RPer and a very good storyteller. I don't like tooting my own horn, but I've been complimented a lot, by others for my interesting take on things. I like to come up with my own characters and my own worlds.

I honestly have not found the right person to share my ideas with, unfortunately. This is because - typically, people who want to RP yaoi are generally only interested in RPing with me for one reason. I don't think I need to explain myself more than that. This has always bothered me whenever I try to meet new people with the same interests. I wouldn't even know how to began describing what I want to see in an RP, so I'm not going to waste too much time, trying to describe it. I just assume I will meet the right person that will just... 'click'. And we'd go on and on about amazing RPs. This has worked for me, in the past, anyways.

I'd also love for them to be willing to work with me, on possible future group roleplays. I like having a good friend to 'hold my hand' and do things with. Fun things, like rally-ing others together, and making friends that way. Its been a long time since I've had a good friend like that.

Well, I'm probably rambling now and this is really starting to go all over the place, so I should really end this topic. I'm just sure there will be things I forgot to say.

All in all, I want to make some lifelong friends. I've always found that - through roleplay - I've made the best friends. And I'd love someone to share some amazing ideas with.

Feel free to post on this topic or PM me if you're interested. I also have MSN, Skype, and AIM.

Israeli Education Minister Rumored Enmeshed in Sex Scandal ...

saar scandal censored article

Uncensored version of Yossi Klein?s article about Gideon Saar scandal

I reported here last year on one of the greatest stories never told in the Israeli media: that education minister Gideon Saar had sex in a Tel Aviv club with an underage girl; that all the Israeli reporters knew this and that none could report it.? Though this blog gets the discreet attention of the military censor and other intelligence officials, reports here aren?t strong enough evidence for Israeli police to commence an investigation.? No one followed up on this story and Saar emerged unscathed.

Now a new scandal is brewing thanks to a brave Haaretz reporter, Yossi Klein.? He wrote a story today, What You Won?t Read in the Papers (censored version).? The report is one of those breathless intrigue-filled exposes which allude to far more than they expose.? He writes about threats and assignations in dark hotel bathrooms, money passing hands, and much more:

Last week, I met veteran journalists and heard stories about politicians.? Lewd stories of the sort I haven?t heard in a very long while.? Urges, threats, bathroom stalls in dark night clubs?

I?ve never thought politicians were angels.? But I never believed they?d endanger their career and position.? I erred.? It seems that something happens to men with power.? It blinds them.? Their blood goes straight to their nether region and makes them believe something bursts forth there that simply can?t be refused.? It also goes right to their pocket as well: we?ve heard of envelopes passing from hand to hand and insiders bounced from job to job.

When I first read the previous paragraph I thought Klein was claiming Saar had bribed people to maintain silence about his dalliances.? But the reporter may be referring to other politicians who?ve done this in similar circumstances.

Klein moves into a tutorial on the moral and social responsibilities of journalists to report what they know about such scandals given the right to privacy of even public officials.? But there are times, he says, when rumors have a solid basis and the public has a clear interest in knowing the information.? But reporters still can?t report such news, at least not in Israel.? Why?? Ah, now that?s complicated.? We?ll try to explain:

I?d like to believe that a minister comes to his office with a clean mind.? The calculations of the drunken minister are different from those of one who is sober.? The calculations of a minister who?s a sexual harasser are different from those of one who has self-restraint.? A minister who?s a traffic offender can?t preach good driving and a finance minister who?s an embezzler can?t demand austerity.

Why do journalists only talk and not publish?? They don?t publish because news that?s passed the test of credibility and legality still must pass another test.? Not a simple test.? All the stories I heard this past week failed it.? The test is set up at the end of the hall in the office of the publisher.? It?s a test of connections, because connections for a publisher are a supreme value.

The map of connections between a publisher and the powerful is many-branched.? Ties of friendship between them go above and beyond age or party.? Love blossoms: Sheldon loves Bibi and Nimrodi loved Katsav.? Mozes at Yediot loves Olmert and Lieberman.? How does a journalist know about whom he can level criticism?? Mozes went to kindergarten with Olmert?? Served with Lieberman during army service?? Such ties are reflected in the newspaper from front to back. There is no journalist who hasn?t heard and doesn?t know.? You don?t write about friends [of the publisher].

The following paragraph was the censored one (paragraphs following the first one were not censored):

Most friendly of all is the education minister, Gideon Saar.? His ties are wide and deep.? He?s a friend of Yediot and Maariv and right at home with Yisrael HaYom.? You can?t write a nasty word about him because journalists respect those their bosses love.? The education minister can do whatever it comes into? his head to do and but criticism can only be offered to a limited extent.

Journalists love too.? They?re drawn to the powerful.? They call this ?cultivating the source.?? In the best of circumstances, the source offers vital information and the journalist arranges protection from negative publicity. In the worst circumstances, the source appoints the journalist to be his advisor, arranges a private car for him, an office and secretary.

Journalists must report what people try to hide.? The assumption that the public deserves to know what they?re trying to hide from it deserves reconsideration.? The public has a right to know.? But doesn?t have the will to make this right real.

The director of the prime minister?s office harassed a female staffer and resigned.? Now he continues to pull the strings, but from another room.? And no one?s terribly upset.? This story we did read in the papers.

gideon saar

Gideon and Shelly Saar in happier times (Elad Dayan)

Several Israeli media watchdogs including Dvorit Shargel and Oren Persico noticed that in the online version all references to Saar were excised.? My Israeli source tells me that Saar?s lawyers threatened Haaretz with a major lawsuit unless the editors dropped their client?s name from the story, which they dutifully did.? But the cat?s out of the bag since they couldn?t destroy all the papers they?d published, which name Saar.

There?s good news and bad news in this report aside from the story itself and its subjects.? The good news is that there are enterprising Israeli journalists willing to speak truth to power regardless of the impact it may have on their careers.? The very bad news is that in the current political climate of fear and intimidation against the Israeli media, Haaretz?s publisher decided to censor this report because he didn?t want to risk a lawsuit from Saar?s litigious side.

Interestingly, last month Saar?s wife of 22 years demanded a separation and Saar is now living in a rented Tel Aviv apartment.? The Israeli gossip columns have written breathlessly about this new desirable bachelor on the market, without explaining why he was tossed out of his home by his wife.? So go the gossip rags.

Rumors have swirled for a long time about Saar having affairs with other women.? One of the most notable partners named has been Labor?s leader, Shelly Yachimovich.? Since Klein, in his article makes reference to powerful politicians and their alliances crossing party lines, it?s sensible to infer that the reporter might be alluding to such an affair between the two.? The other interesting aspect of timing for this story is that Israel?s election campaign has just begun to heat up.? Labor is a hot political property right now.? It doesn?t yet threaten Likud?s dominance, but Yachimovich is a bright star in the election firmament.? She has no obvious scandals or corruption hanging over her head as all other prominent Israeli politicians do.? In other words, it?s terribly opportune to smear Yachimovich at this point in the electoral process in order to cut her and her party down to size.

Another bomb shell announced today is that Netanyahu?s Likud and Lieberman?s Yisrael Beitenu are merging.? My Israeli source tells me that this plan announced today wasn?t scheduled for release at all.? It was supposed to be held back till later in the campaign in order to build a sense of drama.? But Netanyahu thought the Saar story could become huge, distract from the campaign and hurt Likud?s prospects.? So he announced news of the merger in order to take the wind out of the sails of the Saar scandal.

Saar is a rising star in the Israeli political scene.? As Klein?s article makes clear, he is beloved by editors and reporters alike.? He has relationships that cross party lines.? He is a powerful figure and has commanding stature.? Not to mention that he plays a sensitive role in political discourse as education minister.? He guides the education of Israel?s youth.? He determines what students learn about Israeli history and how they form their Jewish (or Palestinian) identity.? As such, his role involves setting a moral example.? This story threatens to destroy whatever credibility he has established as a model for young people.? Imagine a sexual predator and serial adulterer determining the educational and moral standards for the young people of the nation.

Saar has also made a pact with the devil in the form of Im Tirzu, the neo-fascist youth movement undertaking a campaign against academic freedom in Israel.? The group, allied with Saar has smeared the political science department at Ben Gurion University and threatened it with closure due to supposed anti-Zionist tendencies among the faculty.? They have done the same with other universities and departments though they haven?t succeeded nearly as well elsewhere.? Noted Israeli political blogger and Ben Gurion faculty member, Idan Landau, calls him the worst education minister in the history of Israel.

Though it should be said that Israeli politicians are so universally embroiled in scandals, whether financial or sexual, that the public are entirely jaded by such stories.? Unless the subject is indicted or convicted, people barely notice.? So it will take more exposure and reporting on this story before Israel will give this the attention it truly deserves.

Will Gideon Saar weather this storm?? I?m afraid he might with the network of relationships and enablers he?s cultivated in politics and the media.? But I hope he will get what he deserves.

I'm a Democrat Because I'm a Mormon - Religion News Service

A couple of weeks ago my bumper sticker arrived, the one I had to special order. ?I?m voting for Obama,? it proclaimed, ??and I?m a Mormon.?

In the last year, the LDS Church?s popular ?I?m a Mormon? ads have created a brand with Mormons identifying themselves in an unexpected way (e.g., ?I?m a drummer in a rock band!? or ?I?m a competitive motorcyclist!?) and then following it up with the tagline, ?and I?m a Mormon.?

But in my case, a different conjunction is in order. ?And? is not enough. I?m voting for Obama because I am a Mormon.

I?m not alone in this, though as a Mormon Democrat I am a minority within a minority. There are more of us than people assume, even though in the current election, with a fellow Latter-day Saint running for president, approximately 84 percent of Mormons say they?ll be voting for Mitt Romney. This is significantly higher than the 60-odd percent of Mormons who self-identified as Republican in the 2006 Faith Matters Survey.

It hasn?t always been this way. In fact, at one time Mormons swung very much in the other direction. In the 1896 presidential election, 51 percent of the nation?s popular vote went to Republican William McKinley, but in the spanking new state of Utah McKinley captured only an anemic showing of 17.3 percent. According to Notre Dame political scientist David E. Campbell, Mormons went heavily for populist Democrat William Jennings Bryan that year instead.

The Democratic trend continued. From 1932 to 1948, Mormons echoed national sentiments by repeatedly electing Democrats FDR and Harry Truman to office, often by a larger margin than the rest of the nation. In 1964, Lyndon Johnson carried Utah by ten percentage points, and throughout the 1970s the Utah state legislature was solidly Democratic. (And there is evidence from sociologist Armand Mauss that Mormons outside of Utah were more liberal than their Utah counterparts on political and social issues, so the Utah voting patterns are probably a bit more conservative than American Mormons more generally.)

So. What happened to my people?

The LDS Church is careful as an institution to remain politically neutral, so how did the vast majority of American Mormons veer so far to the right?

Since the 1970s, Mormons have increasingly allied themselves with Republicans in matters political, as if the GOP is, as the old joke goes, God?s own party. Utah has become so reliably Republican that neither major party even campaigns there in force for presidential politics. For Republicans, winning Utah is a fait accompli, so why spend time and money there? For Democrats, winning Utah is an outlandish fantasy, so why spend time and money there?

Most everybody loses in a single-party system, so I?m proud to stand in a long tradition of Mormons who have voted on the other side. But it isn?t just history that drives me to be a Mormon Democrat; it?s belief.

As a Mormon, it?s my job to ensure that the poor are cared for. I believe the Book of Mormon?s explicit claims that our standing with God rests upon how we treat the poor?not just as individuals, but as societies. (King Benjamin?s sermon is a case in point.) As a Mormon I am called to vote for candidates who won?t stomp on the poor.

Romney does not look promising on this score. In fact, he appears more concerned with lining the pockets of the rich. According to the Tax Policy Center (as reported in the October issue of Money magazine), people earning more than $500,000 a year will get an 10% increase in after-tax earnings under Romney?s plan.

As a Mormon, it?s my job to protect life. This means all life, whether it?s ending the war in Iraq (thank you, President Obama) or decreasing the number of actual abortions that occur in America (thank you, President Clinton).

Republicans talk a big game about outlawing abortion, all while implementing policies that effectively contribute to abortion?s tragic proliferation. They want to cut health care, including programs like WIC; make contraception less available to women; end sex education in schools; and have no federal subsidies for child care. Those are all policies that chip away at women?s non-abortion options, particularly since women who live below the poverty line are four times as likely to have an abortion as women who do not.

As a Mormon, it?s my job to be a good steward of the earth. For all that Romney belongs to the same church I do, he does not seem remotely concerned about our planet?s future. He has mocked forward-thinking attempts to invest in clean energy sources and raising the standards for gas mileage in new cars. He calls the EPA ?a tool in the hands of the president to crush the private enterprise system.? His views on the environment are short-sighted.

Let me say it again: I am voting for Obama because I am a Mormon, not in spite of it.

All quiet as deadline for full NHL season nears

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NHL's deadline for playing a full, 82-game season arrived Thursday with no new discussions between the league and its locked-out players.

Without a new collective bargaining agreement that would end the league's lockout of players on its 40th day, the NHL vowed to cut the season short. An announcement officially taking a full schedule out of play wasn't immediately planned.

Major money-making events such as the upcoming outdoor Winter Classic and the All-Star game could soon be in peril, too.

"No contact, and I don't anticipate any announcements today," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told The Associated Press in an email Thursday.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman already painted a pessimistic picture on Wednesday, saying at a news conference for the Islanders' move to Brooklyn that, "Unfortunately, it looks like an 82-game season is not going to be a reality."

The league has already canceled all 135 scheduled games through Nov. 1, but the thought was those could be rescheduled if a deal was reached by the end of Thursday and play started Nov. 2.

In making its most recent offer to the players, the NHL presented a proposal that included a 50-50 split of hockey-related revenues. But that was contingent on the sides making the Thursday deadline and getting the season under way following a week of training camp.

The union responded with three counterproposals, all of which would get the sides to a 50-50 deal, but the league rejected them quickly because they didn't work off the NHL's offer. Talks then broke down, and the NHL turned down the union's offer to return to the table this week with no preconditions. The NHL wants anything and everything open to discussion.

The league's position is if the players' association isn't willing to negotiate off the NHL's offer ? which Bettman has called the league's best ? or make a counteroffer using that proposal as a framework, then there is no sense in meeting just to meet.

"The fact of the matter is there are just sometimes that you need to take time off because it's clear that you can't do anything to move the process forward," Bettman said. "We're at one of those points right now because we gave our very best offer. That offer, for better or for worse, was contingent on playing an 82-game season. So I think things actually in some respects may get more difficult."

NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr said Wednesday night that the league's deadline was bogus.

"We are and continue to be ready to meet to discuss how to resolve our remaining differences, with no preconditions. For whatever reason, the owners are not," he said. "At the same time they are refusing to meet, they are winding the clock down to yet another artificial deadline they created."

There is a major divide between the sides over how to deal with existing player contracts. The union wants to ensure that those are all paid in full without affecting future player contracts. Bettman expressed a willingness to discuss the "make whole" provisions on existing contracts, but only if the economic portions of the league's offer are accepted first by the union.

Bettman refused to say whether the 50-50 split in the proposal would come off the table if a full season isn't played.

"I'm not going to negotiate publicly," he said.

This lockout, the third of Bettman's tenure as commissioner, began Sept. 16. The 2004-05 season was lost in the last work stoppage.

Refrain from feeling shameful about your bankruptcy. The bankruptcy process makes people feel guilty and ashamed. These feelings, however, are of no benefit to anyone, and they can be detrimental to your mental health. Having the right outlook during a tough financial upheaval is a great attitude in coping with bankruptcy.

TIP! Know that you are able to re-file if you?ve made a mistake in filing for bankruptcy. Generally, you are only granted an automatic 30 day stay if your case is dismissed.

There are lawyers who maintain a telephone service meant to field calls from creditors attempting to contact debtors who have filed for bankruptcy. Give your creditors your lawyer?s number and they will get a confirmation that you do not owe them anything. That notification then puts them on notice that they need to desist from contacting you about this debt anymore.

TIP! In order to properly assist you with a bankruptcy filing, your lawyer needs to know about every significant debt that you currently have. This will mean providing a great deal of sensitive information: credit card companies, lenders, hospitals, personal debts and so forth.

Be certain to create a list that displays all the debts you want discharged when you file. Debts that you leave out of your filing paperwork will not be addressed during the bankruptcy proceedings. It is up to you to ensure your debts are written down so you don?t need to pay bills that might have been discharged.

TIP! Make sure you are completely honest when filing for bankruptcy. Hiding your assets is never wise.

When talking to a bankruptcy attorney, you must tell them all of the creditors you owe large amounts of money to. Let him know your entire financial situation, even if you owe money to friends and family.

TIP! Don?t hide from your friends and family while you go through bankruptcy. Going through a bankruptcy can be an excruciating experience.

If you are going to file for bankruptcy, you should not give your assets to another individual within one year of filing. This is a very obvious attempt in hiding assets and could result in having your claim being rejected. Many assets are exempt from seizure by creditors, anyway. If you have transferred assets recently, then you should wait to file.

TIP! Research what assets are exempt from seizure before you decide to declare bankruptcy. The Bankruptcy Code provides a listing of the various asset types that are not included in the bankruptcy process.

Once your bankruptcy has been complete for a month or two, acquire multiple copies of credit reports. Check to make sure your credit report accurately reflects your recently discharged debts. If there are any errors, make sure that you take action to resolve them as soon as possible.

TIP! It may be counterintuitive, but in some cases, pulling the trigger and filing for bankruptcy may have better credit consequences than continuing a pattern of credit delinquencies. While bankruptcy may appear in your credit report, you could surely try to fix your damaged credit.

If you?re filing for bankruptcy soon, be sure you are going to hire a lawyer. It is difficult to make all of the necessary decisions yourself, and expert guidance will be helpful. An attorney will make sure that everything is being done correctly.

TIP! Rather than checking online, try to get recommendations from friends or family about a suitable bankruptcy attorney. Don?t be taken in by some fly-by-night company that exists only to profit from the suffering of others.

After you decide that bankruptcy is your best option, learn as much as you can about the laws that apply to your case. In order to protect your financial future, you are advised to talk with your attorney and learn as much as you can about the bankruptcy process.

TIP! If you know that you are about to file for bankruptcy, don?t exploit the information asymmetry and get huge cash advances on your credit cards. Doing so, is a type of fraud that may result in your having to pay back all money advanced from credit card accounts in the months just prior to your bankruptcy.

Once you make the decision to file bankruptcy, you need to start learning about it. The process will be much simpler if you are well-informed. Much of the information you need was provided to you in the article above

Social Media Strategy ? Are Organizations ... - Business 2 Community

Social Media is here with us. Whether you like it or not, customers are talking about your organization / brand in the social networks. Brands must embrace and join social media since this is where customers are having conversations. The question is not whether brands should join social media or not, but whether they are doing it right. Social media is a room with high velocity of information and a lot of tact is required to achieve great results. For this reason, I will address myself to the issue of Strategy because I spend a lot of time researching and analyzing what brands / corporates do in the digital space.

The first thing that is critical when thinking of a social media strategy is to ensure that before joining social media, train your staff. I have over-and-over thought about the merits of out-sourcing social media from an agency or doing it internally. I have come to the conclusion that your own staffs are best suited to deal with social media as they have your brand?s DNA. Your staffs understand the products and services offered more than anyone else. However, an agency would be useful for running marketing campaigns and offering internal training. The person facing your customers online must be confident; must know what to say and how to say it. This happens by training staff as social media is a new platform for engaging customers for most brands. Once you?ve trained your staff, empower them by giving them the resources that they need to do the job. Resources here may include; fast / reliable Internet, PC / laptop, a tablet / a smartphone and a social media management system.

While joining social media, it is useful to ask yourself what objectives and goals you intend to achieve. The best practice is to align your social media goals with the overall business objectives. For example, your business objectives could be increasing market size, increasing sales, getting more leads, or getting better customer satisfaction. Your social media goals should not be separate from the objectives that the business wants to achieve.

Altimeter Group asserts that there are social media risks to a business that you must identify, such as;

  • Reputational risks
  • Regulatory and compliance violation risks.
  • Legal and privacy risks.
  • Operational risks.

There is therefore the need to come up with plans on how to assess and mitigate those risks in order to reduce their impact to your business.

We live in a 24-hours news-cycle, and the issue of constant surveillance and monitoring is critical. Big brands should have online listening and monitoring systems that gives you alerts when your brand is mentioned online. Online monitoring systems scan the whole internet landscape ? blogs, sites, social networks and give you useful intelligence or data. There are listening platforms that can analyze and give you meaningful reports such as the tone of sentiments from customers- whether they are positive, neutral or negative. These data is useful to executives as it shows trends that will help them in decision-making.

Brands should also ensure they master the practice of responding quickly to customer queries. Social media is a viral medium and the longer you take to respond to an angry customer, the more negative and agitated the customer becomes. Faster turnaround times are critical to an online customer service. For advanced companies, the issue of taking eight hours to respond to an online query shouldn?t even arise.

The other issue is identifying and building an internal team of champions / advocates who will help push your messages out. These are your online ambassadors that help amplify positive messages.

There is also the critical issue of having a social media policy. Not many Kenya brands on social media have a policy document that sets the guidelines or the rules of engagement. A social media policy will address best practices and empower staff to use social media responsibly. A good social media policy must not be very restrictive as this would be counter-productive.

The last thing I would address is that anyone who wants to understand social media must keep learning. New platforms and channels will constantly be introduced in the market. The ability to learn them and identify which one best works for your organization is very important.

Ask Slashdot: Mathematical Fiction?

An anonymous reader writes "Neal Stephenson's 1999 Cryptonomicon was a great yarn. It was also a thoroughly enjoyable (and too short) romp through some mathematics. Where can I find more of that? I should say that I don't want SF ? at least none of the classic SF I read voraciously in the 70s; it's just not the same thing, and far too often just a puppet-theatre for an author's philosophical rant. Has any author managed to hit the same vein as Stephenson did? (Good non-fiction math-reads are also gratefully accepted. What have you got?)"

Analysis of dinosaur bone cells confirms ancient protein preservation

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? A team of researchers from North Carolina State University and the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) has found more evidence for the preservation of ancient dinosaur proteins, including reactivity to antibodies that target specific proteins normally found in bone cells of vertebrates. These results further rule out sample contamination, and help solidify the case for preservation of cells -- and possibly DNA -- in ancient remains.

Dr. Mary Schweitzer, professor of marine, earth and atmospheric sciences with a joint appointment at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, first discovered what appeared to be preserved soft tissue in a 67-million-year-old Tyrannosaurus Rex in 2005. Subsequent research revealed similar preservation in an even older (about 80-million-year-old)Brachylophosaurus canadensis. In 2007 and again in 2009, Schweitzer and colleagues used chemical and molecular analyses to confirm that the fibrous material collected from the specimens was collagen.

Schweitzer's next step was to find out if the star-shaped cellular structures within the fibrous matrix were osteocytes, or bone cells. Using techniques including microscopy, histochemistry and mass spectrometry, Schweitzer demonstrates that these cellular structures react to specific antibodies, including one -- a protein known as PHEX -- that is found in the osteocytes of living birds. The findings appear online in Bone and were presented last week at the annual meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology.

"The PHEX finding is important because it helps to rule out sample contamination," Schweitzer says. "Some of the antibodies that we used will react to proteins found in other vertebrate cells, but none of the antibodies react to microbes, which supports our theory that these structures are surviving osteocytes. Additionally, the antibody to PHEX will only recognize and bind to one specific site only found in mature bone cells from birds. These antibodies don't react to other proteins or cells. Because so many other lines of evidence support the dinosaur/bird relationship, finding these proteins helps make the case that these structures are dinosaurian in origin."

Schweitzer and her team also tested for the presence of DNA within the cellular structures, using an antibody that only binds to the "backbone" of DNA. The antibody reacted to small amounts of material within the "cells" of both the T. rex and the B. canadensis. To rule out the presence of microbes, they used an antibody that binds histone proteins, which bind tightly to the DNA of everything except microbes, and got another positive result. They then ran two other histochemical stains which fluoresce when they attach to DNA molecules. Those tests were also positive. These data strongly suggest that the DNA is original, but without sequence data, it is impossible to confirm that the DNA is dinosaurian.

"The data thus far seem to support the theory that these structures can be preserved over time," Schweitzer says. "Hopefully these findings will give us greater insight into the processes of evolutionary change."

Dr. Marshall Bern, from PARC, performed the mass spectrometry. Former NC State doctoral student Timothy Cleland and research assistant Wenxia Zheng also contributed to the work, which was funded by grants from the National Science Foundation and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.

U.S. Army vehicle contracts may escape automatic budget cut axe

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Army on Tuesday said its ground vehicle procurement programs may escape significant impact from mandatory additional budget cuts due to start taking effect in January, since most of the programs are only in the developmental phase at the moment.

Scott Davis, program executive officer for the Army's ground combat systems, said most of the Army's ground vehicle programs were not multi-year agreements or large-scale production contracts, which limited the impact of across-the-board cuts.

"We're sort of in a transitional phase right now. We don't have a large production stream," Davis told reporters at the annual Association of the U.S. Army conference.

Automatic spending cuts totaling $1.2 trillion over the next decade -- of which half would come from Pentagon accounts -- were mandated by Congress as part of a deal to raise the debt ceiling for federal borrowing last year.

The White House last month said the cuts would result in a 9.4 percent cut in defense programs or $54.7 billion in fiscal year 2013, which began October 1, including $15.3 billion from Pentagon procurement accounts.

Those cuts would come on top of $487 billion in reductions to proposed military spending that are already on the books for the next decade.

Arms industry executives and military leaders have been pressing lawmakers to avert or at least delay the reductions after they return to Washington following the November elections.

During Monday's presidential debate, President Barack Obama said the cuts set for next year "will not happen", sparking surprise and skepticism from some Republicans who said Obama had not presented a plan for avoiding the cuts.

Davis said there were few details available about how the cuts could be avoided, but some additional reductions might be "manageable" given the current state of several big programs, including initial development of a new combat vehicle.

"I think it's manageable inside our portfolio from the perspective that we're in developmental efforts and we may be able to accommodate with adjustments," Davis told reporters.

The U.S. unit of BAE Systems Plc and General Dynamics Corp won Army contracts in August 2011 to begin working on technology development for a new Army infantry fighting vehicle. The Army does not plan to move to the next phase of that program until December 2013.

It has awarded smaller contracts to BAE and GD to work on modifications of their existing Bradley Fighting Vehicles and Abrams tanks.

Playing too many video games before bed may be bad for you ...

Even the laptop is in sleep mode...

If there?s one thing that I don?t have a problem with, it?s falling asleep. I can grab some shuteye pretty much anywhere, on anything. Which would explain why I woke up in a bathtub full of ice, a scar in my side and was a few organs short, the last time that I crashed at Geoff?s place. According to science, all those late night sessions that he spent playing video games have been bad for him, as researchers now claim thattoo many games before beddy bye-times is a bad thing.

The Medical Xpress has reported that a study conducted on teenage boys who played violent video games for between 1-3 hours before sleep, over two nights, showed a decrease of 27 minutes in nap time, and a 39 minute delay in sleep onset.

?While they went to bed at their regular bedtime, the adolescents? still experienced significant sleep disruptions caused by frequent awakenings throughout the night,? said Flinders University child sleep psychologist Dr. Michael Gradisar, who supervised the study.

Gradisar also noted that the dreaming section of sleep, the Losing my religion component REM, also experienced a 12 minute reduction. ?This may not seem like a significant reduction but REM plays an important part in helping us remember content we learnt that day so for adolescents in their final years of school who are revising for exams, winding down at night with a video game might not be the best idea?, Gradisar said.

However, according to the research, the teens who played for only under an hour, experienced no issues whatsoever, and fell asleep within standard times.?But their sleep onset delay almost doubled to 39 minutes when they played for two and a half hours so clearly there?s a limit to how much you should play before bed,? said Gradisar.

This is all based on games with a gory and bloody tone to them though, and did not take into account more child-friendly titles. ?The aim of this investigation wasn?t to assess the content of video games but to look at the effect of the worst possible thing to do before bed because at the end of the day we want to better understand what affects adolescents? sleep,? Gradisar explained.

?At the moment, less than one hour seems okay.?

Well, that explains Geoff at least. For the rest of us though, I?m certain that plenty of us have already fallen asleep in a couch playing Mortal Kombat, Mario Kart or anything in-between. I?ll pinch the salt heavily on this research, methinks.

Campaign to abolish California's death penalty begins airing ads

The campaign to replace the death penalty with a sentence of life without parole launched radio and television advertisements Monday, depicting capital punishment as a futile exercise that costs taxpayers and coddles criminals.

With only two weeks left before the election, the Proposition 34 campaign is spending more than $2 million on ads that will air in San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Polls suggest the measure has been struggling but gaining ground.

"Do you know we have the death penalty in California?" actor Edward James Olmos asks in a radio spot for Proposition 34. "You might not, because we almost never use it."

The ads emphasize how few inmates are executed ? 13 since 1978 ? and suggest the money would be better used for schools and crime fighting. California's nonpartisan Legislative Analyst's Office has said the state could save as much as $130 million a year if the death penalty is abolished.

"Death row inmates get special legal teams that work for them, but they don't work or pay 1 cent to the victim's families, like other inmates do," Olmos says. "They just sit in private cells, watching TV."

The campaign's television ad focuses on Francisco "Franky" Carrillo, who served 20 years in prison for a murder he said he did not commit. A judge overturned his conviction and released him last year.

"It took 20 years to prove he was innocent," Olmos said, in English and Spanish ads. "With the death penalty, we always risk executing an innocent person."

Proposition 34 would commute the death sentences of the state's more than 725 condemned inmates to life with no possibility of parole. The inmates would be merged into the general prison population in double cells and be expected to work and pay into victim restitution funds, the sponsors say.

Opponents of the measure are fighting back, emailing "fact sheets," holding news conferences up and down the state and putting their position on mailed slate cards. The opposition has raised less than $1 million, but a campaign spokesman said media advertisements remain under consideration.

Peter DeMarco, a strategist for the No on 34 campaign, said it has relied on prosecutors, police and crime victims to get out its message.

DeMarco complained the advertisement about Carrillo was misleading because Carrillo was never sentenced to death.

"They have not been able to produce a single innocent person whose situation is directly impacted by Prop. 34," DeMarco said.

Opponents have said the projected savings from ending the death penalty are wildly inflated, and their ballot arguments suggest the measure could cost taxpayers. In addition to abolishing the death penalty, Proposition 34 would give local law enforcement agencies $100 million over four years for the prosecution of rapes and murders.

Opponents also complain the backers of Proposition 34 are to blame for the system's delays and predict executions will resume as soon as the state moves to a single-drug method of lethal injection. Court rulings have prevented any executions for six years.

The faces of the No on 34 campaign have been Marc Klaas, whose daughter, Polly, 12, was kidnapped from her bedroom, raped and murdered, and Kermit Alexander, a former pro football player whose mother, sister and two nephews were slain in a case of mistaken identity.

Most California newspapers, including The Times, have endorsed Proposition 34. Natasha Minsker, an ACLU policy director who is running the Proposition 34 campaign, said 40 to 50 volunteers are calling voters each night to ask for support. She said Roman Catholic bishops, pastors and rabbis also have urged their congregations to approve the measure.

"It all comes down to what happens in the next two weeks ? if we are able to move the undecided voters," Minsker said.

TEXT-Fitch: Resource Nationalism in Canada Blocks Malaysia's PETRONAS

Mon Oct 22, 2012 11:38pm EDT

SYDNEY/SEOUL/SINGAPORE, October 23 (Fitch) The government of Canada's decision to block the takeover of Progress Energy Resources by Malaysia's PETRONAS ('A'/Negative) illustrates the rising global trend of resource nationalism.

Governments are under pressure to maximise control of their natural resources as a buffer against the rise in commodity prices over the past 10 years, stalling global economic growth and the ultra-easy monetary policies adopted by major central banks including the US, Europe and Japan.

This decision increases the likelihood that the Canadian government will also reject China's CNOOC Ltd's (CNL, 'A+'/Stable) bid to acquire 100% of Nexen, a Canadian upstream oil and gas producer, for an equity value of CAD15bn.

The Canadian government's decision to block PETRONAS's CAD5.5bn takeover was notwithstanding the fact that PETRONAS had offered a 77% premium to Progress's pre-bid share price - which had been approved by the shareholders.

Canada's industry minister commented that the government "was not satisfied that the proposed investment is likely to be of net benefit to Canada."

Details behind the government's decision are not available, but PETRONAS has 30 days to modify its proposal before the government's decision is finalized. Progress has indicated its willingness to consider the issues behind the rejection, but both Progress and PETRONAS claimed in June 2012 that the deal would provide a net benefit to Canada. Fitch Ratings believes possible reasons for the rejection include the government's desire to ensure that sufficient control and profits remain in Canada, as well as guaranteeing local jobs.

This is in line with the current global wave of "soft" resource nationalism, in which governments are opting to gain a greater share of resource company profits through changing regulation, taxation and contractual terms.

The deal with Progress would have provided PETRONAS with an opportunity to enlarge its reserves, diversify its product range, and potentially commence LNG exports from North America to Asia. Tapping higher-priced and strong LNG demand from Asian utilities would be a strategic alternative for Progress away from its traditional outlet of the North American pipeline gas market.

Progress Energy is an upstream gas producer owning gasfields in the Montney shale areas of British Columbia and Alberta. The company has been unable to expand due to the relatively small size of its operations and financial resources required for development.

Fitch believes that PETRONAS's ownership would provide the required infrastructure investment to commence exports of LNG to Asia. In September, Fitch affirmed PETRONAS's Long-Term Foreign-Currency Issuer Default Rating (IDR) at 'A', which remains one notch above that of Malaysia at 'A-'.

However, the agency changed the Outlook on PETRONAS to Negative, as growing government influence over the company's financials and strategy weakens the case for this state-owned entity to be rated above that of the Malaysian sovereign.

Philanthropy Daily? ? Charity endures

Charity doesn?t amount to much, right? It?s something small, and sometimes it?s nice, but it can accomplish so little in a world with such big problems. To deal with the big problems, to attack their root causes, you need experts and science and big philanthropic institutions, perhaps even the federal government ? or so we?re told.

Yet I just stumbled on a story that makes nonsense of this claim, a story that begins with one troubled boy, whose life was changed by a single, not-large charitable institution that you?ve never heard of. By the time the story ends, thousands of children have had their lives improved.

The story starts with Jared at age five, when a certain doctor first met him. Jared was ?bright, outgoing, and friendly,? the doctor reports. He did well in kindergarten, first grade, and second grade. But in third grade, at age eight, Jared began to have problems. He rejected school: ?It?s stupid.? His teachers said he wasn?t paying attention. Jared ?had tested in the gifted range, especially in creative writing and art, but the problems actually seemed to have started after he was put into these gifted and talented classes.?

His mother, after thorough scientific research, came to the doctor and insisted Jared had ADHD, ?predominantly inattentive type,? which she believed was the root cause of his problems. The doctor agreed to give Jared medication.

After three weeks and no improvement, the mother returned, asking for a higher dose. The doctor demurred and arranged for Jared to meet a famous expert on ADHD who consulted for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The expert agreed Jared needed stronger doses of meds.

But again the medication failed to help. So the NIH expert switched Jared from Ritalin to Adderall. Jared ?became even more moody and withdrawn,? and the expert diagnosed ?a comorbid condition ? depression ? and added Prozac. When Jared began having angry outbursts at school, the doctor added clonidine.?

Poor Jared was now just nine years old, hated school, and had his mind and body receiving three different meds. ?At that point,? the doctor continues, ?the family switched health insurance to a plan we didn?t accept, and I lost touch with them.?

Four years passed ? and recall that those four years from ages?nine to 13 are usually not a time when any boy, much less one whose troubles resist three psychotropic drugs, finds his moods and behavior improving.

Then one day the doctor saw Jared?s name on his patient schedule for a routine physical. He quickly checked his nurse?s notes to see what meds Jared now took: ?none.? When the doctor entered the exam room,

I barely recognized Jared. He was a totally different kid: not merely older, but transformed. He was now muscular and tan.? But the biggest difference was that he was smiling ? a big smile like I hadn?t seen on his face since he was in kindergarten.?

The puzzled doctor asked his usual break-the-ice question for early teens: ?What?s your favorite thing to do in your spare time?? Jared thought the question over. ?Well, right now, I think my favorite thing to do is to read about ancient Minoa.?

?How?s that?? the baffled doctor asked.

?Well maybe ancient Crete. Or Mycenae.? He launched into a fascinating lecture about the ancient island of Thera, in the Aegean Sea. This island was destroyed by a massive volcanic explosion around 1500 BC, he explained. ?But the people living there must have known the volcano was about to erupt,? he told me, ?because when you excavate the remnants of the island ? which is now called Santorini, but it?s really just the caldera of the volcano that used to be Thera ? when you excavate the caldera, you find sheep bones and cattle bones but no human bones.?

After Jared finished his lecture, explaining how the cataclysm may have been the source of the myth of Atlantis, which Plato recorded a millennium later, and suggesting a book for further reading to the fascinated doctor, the man rushed out to speak with his mother. ?What a tremendous change! Tell me what happened,? he implored. But before she could answer, the doctor blurted out his expert speculation: they had stopped the medications.

Jared?s mother shook her head. They tried that, she said, ?but he got worse.? So bad, in fact, that the NIH expert ?worried Jared might be suicidal and talked about hospitalizing him.? So they put Jared back on the medications, even though they did little good.

?So what?s the secret?? I asked. ?What turned everything around??
???? Deborah said, ?We transferred him from Byron to the Heights.?
???? Now it was my turn to shake my head. ?But Byron is an outstanding school,? I said. ?And so is the Heights. They?re both excellent schools. How could transferring Jared from one excellent school to another excellent school make such a huge difference??

The answer, Jared?s mother replied, is that the Heights is an all-boys school. Once again the doctor rejected her answer. ?I don?t mean to be disrespectful,? he said, ?but we?re in the twenty-first century now?; single-sex education is just ?an antiquated relic of the Victorian era.?

But Jared?s mother told him he should visit the Heights, saying,

The people at Byron had determined, quite correctly, that Jared is gifted in art and in creative writing. So they put him in special advanced classes in art and creative writing ? where he was the only boy, or sometimes just one of two boys?. So the other boys teased him. ?You like art, you must be a fag,? they said. Jared asked to drop out of the art class. He came to feel that school was a waste of time. His talents just led to him being made fun of. But he couldn?t pretend to like the things that the other boys like, that boys are ?supposed? to like at a coed school. So he was just miserable. At the Heights, he?s just blossomed. Obviously all the kids in the art class at the Heights are boys. Same with the creative writing class. And it?s just amazing how rapidly his interests have expanded and matured in the years he?s been at the Heights. Not just academically. His favorite teacher, the history teacher, is also the lacrosse coach. So Jared decided to try lacrosse, and you know what? He?s pretty good!?

Although the doctor initially rejected what Jared?s mother told him, he was so shocked by Jared?s transformation that it brought him ?an epiphany of sorts,? because he realized that ?the school provided Jared?s salvation.? That is to say, a seriously troubled boy, who easily could have gone down many dark roads, was not saved by NIH expertise, by psychopharmacological technology, or even by his ?dedicated and concerned parents? who??all along? had done everything they could for him. No, the school, a small religious charity, ?made all the difference.?

The school?s personnel, of course, had simply accepted Jared because they have a mission to serve boys, and they hoped they could help Jared. The staff members couldn?t be certain they could help Jared, but helping boys one at a time is why they show up in the morning.

And, I?m sure, none of those staff members ever dreamt that by helping one young boy they would completely change the life of his doctor, Leonard Sax. But they did that, too, and much more.

Dr. Sax has gone on to write three books on the differences between boys and girls and how educators should take those differences into account (details in the footnote below). He?s also founded the National Association for Single Sex Public Education (NASSPE), because he doesn?t think single-sex schooling should be available only to parents who can spend thousands a year on private schools like the Heights.

This weekend, NASSPE held its Eighth International Conference in Houston, with speakers from Australia, Canada, Colombia, Iceland, and 16 of the United States. Its website has received 1.9 million visitors from all over the world during its decade of existence. It offers free assistance to any public educator who wants to know how to navigate the legal regulations that govern single-sex public schooling. (For more information, go here.)

When Dr. Sax gave birth to NASSPE, only about a dozen U.S. public schools had single-sex classrooms. Today, in the 2011-12 school year, NASSPE counts at least 506 public schools that offer single-sex educational opportunities. About 390 of those schools are co-ed schools that offer single-sex classrooms but retain at least some co-ed activities. NASSPE doesn?t estimate the total number of students affected, but it?s obviously thousands, perhaps tens of thousands, which NASSPE and Dr. Sax can claim credit for helping. No one will ever know how many Jareds are among them.

Dr. Sax, I hasten to add, doesn?t think every boy and girl will do best in single-sex schools, but he has seen such schools help many boys leave meds behind and flourish, and also help many girls likewise discover new potentials and accomplish things they had never imagined.

I stumbled on this story after my recent blog post attacking the ACLU?s cruel campaign to squash single-sex schools. Dr. Sax, with whom I?d never had contact, kindly sent me his books, and the first chapter I read told the story of Jared and ? to my surprise ? the Heights School, where my oldest boy attends.

The Heights has the charitable mission of helping boys grow into good men. Its charity toward Jared changed his life dramatically. Then that change planted a seed in Dr. Sax and changed his life. The doctor?s changed life in turn led him to help others change thousands more lives ? unless the heartless ACLU lawyers succeed in killing those new seeds.

This demonstration of the power of charity brings to mind an essay by the Southern novelist Flannery O?Connor which some Heights boys have likely read. In ?An Introduction to A Memoir of Mary Ann,? O?Connor tells a similar story of how one small charitable act by the novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne?? which?his daughter Rose later learned of?? led Rose to found an order of religious sisters who serve thousands of ?charity? cancer patients.

In the essay, O?Connnor declares that through such small acts, ?charity grows invisibly among us, entwining the living and the dead.?

?Charity,? she concludes, ?is hard.??But it ?endures.?

FOOTNOTE:??The Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne, founded in 1900, continue their works of charity at three Homes across the United States and one new mission in Kisumu, Kenya: ?All of our Homes are supported by unsolicited donations from the public. We take no Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance or private funds from the patients or their families.? For more on Dr. Sax?s books, visit LeonardSax.com?(Jared?s story is in Boys Adrift). For an excellent discussion of charity vs. philanthropy, see George Weigel?s ?The Blessings of Charity? in Philanthropy magazine. For criticisms of ?root causes? philanthropy, see William Schambra?s essay here. Flannery O?Connor?s ?Introduction to A Memoir of Mary Ann? appears in her essay collection Mystery and Manners and in her Collected Works. Hawthorne fictionalized his charitable act in?the?short story ?Outside Glimpses of English Poverty,? found in his collection Our Old Home (online here); he privately recorded the actual incident in his English Notebooks on February 28, 1856 (online here).

Analysis: Debating world policy amid tumult abroad

WASHINGTON (AP) ? For months the one reliable constant for Barack Obama was the public's approval of his handling of foreign policy and terrorism. Al-Qaida was on the run, he would say. The war in Iraq was over. Bin Laden was dead. Crowds cheered and national polls showed a majority in the country stood with him.

But with 15 days left before Election Day, the landscape has changed, and as Obama and Republican rival Mitt Romney take their seats at their third, final and foreign-policy focused debate Monday evening in Boca Raton, Fla., the president will be facing headwinds from abroad instead of the breezes that once had been at his back.

Libya. Uncertainty in a post Arab Spring world. Iran's nuclear intentions. U.S. casualties at the hands of Afghan security forces. Europe's continued struggles with its economic and financial crisis. A conflagration in Syria. Amid these mounting challenges Obama will hear Romney charge him with exhibiting timid leadership.

At the same time, Romney, far less experienced on the international political scene, is seeking to close the deal with voters. He'll use Monday's debate to portray himself not only as an economic savior but as a plausible and stronger commander in chief. To that, Obama will warn that Romney represents the kind of foreign policy "that gets us into wars with no plan to get out."

The debate will pick up where the second debate left off ? on the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens. The attack underscored the uncertainty that has engulfed parts of the Arab world in the aftermath of the Arab Spring uprisings that Obama supported. Obama also faces difficult questions about his administration's accounts in the aftermath of the Benghazi attack and over unheeded requests for additional security in Libya's outposts.

Indeed, the Libya attack has become Obama's Achilles' Heel. Romney aimed and missed in a botched challenge to Obama in last week's debate. He gets his next and best shot Monday.

The debate also unfolds amid fresh reports that the Obama administration is holding open the possibility of one-on-one negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program ? a potentially hopeful though hardly certain development in what has been the most nettlesome national security problem confronting the U.S.

Possible Iranian talks, first reported by The New York Times on Saturday, introduce a surprise element into the election campaign and provide a counterpoint to Romney's argument that Obama has not done enough to protect Israel against an Iranian nuclear threat. It's not clear how much Obama will make of this in the debate; the White House denied that an agreement to hold talks was in place. Romney's debate sparring partner Rob Portman, hinting at Romney's reaction, dismissed the news on Sunday as an orchestrated leak and said the U.S. should not enter into negotiations with Tehran without allied partners.

Moderator Bob Schieffer of CBS News has picked five topics for the debate, devoting the most time to the Middle East and terrorism. Other subjects are America's role in the world, Afghanistan and Pakistan, Israel and Iran, and the rise of China.

Still, unlike their sharp divisions on economic and social issues, the foreign policy quarrels between Obama and Romney are less about goals than they are about strategy. Both candidates want to end combat troop presence in Afghanistan in 2014, but Romney says such a step should not be hasty. Romney backs Obama administration sanctions against Iran, but says Obama's military threats should be tougher. Both stand tough against China on trade, but Romney would label China a currency manipulator and consider imposing tariffs to protect U.S. manufacturers. Both say the U.S. should not send U.S. troops to strife-torn Syria, but Romney has called for "more assertive" tactics.

Within that nuanced debate lie risks for both men. Voters want to see strength in their leaders and Obama can't afford to be defensive. But the country is also war weary and Romney can't sound too bellicose, especially to women voters, with whom he has made some inroads.

Though the days of Obama winning a Nobel Peace Prize seem forgotten in the aftermath of euro crises and Arab Spring and Arab tumult, his standing on the world stage had seemed solid compared to Romney, who had faltered in his summer foray overseas.

Obama last week even joked about Romney's international troubles, which included slighting the British over security preparations for the Olympics and angering Palestinians by crediting Israel's culture for its greater economic success in the region.

"Some of you guys remember, after my foreign trip in 2008, I was attacked as a celebrity because I was so popular with our allies overseas," Obama told a white tie crowd at Thursday's Alfred E. Smith Memorial Dinner. "And I have to say, I'm impressed with how well Governor Romney has avoided that problem."

Yet however Romney is viewed beyond U.S. shores, his ratings on foreign policy among U.S. voters has been improving at Obama's expense. Obama's approval on foreign policy issues last month fell below 50 percent for the first time since May 2011, according to an NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll. And a Pew Research Center poll earlier this month found Obama and Romney almost even in public perceptions of who would better handle foreign policy questions. Romney had trailed Obama by 15 points on the same question in September.

Still, Obama is counting on one accomplishment that even Romney concedes.

Last week, at the Alfred E. Smith dinner, Obama reminded the audience that the last debate would focus on foreign policy. "Spoiler alert," he added. "We got bin Laden."
