Customer Experience is the Future of Retail | Business 2 Community

Women's world. One of the things that interests me about retail is the potential for performance ? for art, drama and transformational customer experiences. But so few retailers deliver this. In almost every case, I am underwhelmed by the retail experience. The range on offer is limited, understocked or difficult to find. Customer service ? should you actually be able to find someone to serve you ? tends to be cursory and uninformed. Sure there are exceptions ? but these tend to be localised ? known and loved in pockets across the city.

One of my favourites are the jovial, knowledgeable and friendly ?grandpas? at Bunnings Warehouse who are not only helpful but willing to share a lifetime of home maintenance experience. When I bought my first lawn mower years ago, I was guided through the different options and brands by a man who might have been my own grandfather. He not only sold me the option he thought was best for my needs, he also gave me tips on mowing ? time of day, technique and even suggestions to get the right kind of edge close to the vege patch. This high touch customer service humanises the vast spaces of the hardware warehouses that have become weekend Meccas for Australian home owners with more than a passing interest in DIY.

My local salon, MGs for Men, also takes a very different approach to customer experience. It?s neither a bare bones barber shop nor a relaxing pseudo-day spa, it?s closer to a testosterone laden workout. Staffed by a team of edgy, tattooed young men, it feels closer to a gym with squads of buff personal trainers prowling the tiles whipping their charges into physical shape.

But fewer of the larger retailers can claim anything like this sense of brand personality. In fact, I often feel awash in a sea of beige.

Going online is no better. Australia?s major retailers ignored eCommerce for decades ? insisting that it was a fad and that shoppers would eventually return to the bricks and mortar experience for the convenience of immediate delivery, sizing in-store and handling returns. Harvey Norman and David Jones have recently revamped their sites ? which is a welcome improvement ? but still falls far short of a ?transformational experience? with limited or no thought given to the online customer?s buying process. The sites are designed around the way that the retailers categorise their range rather than helping customer discover or browse ? there are no sizing charts to give the customer a sense of confidence and there is no help or customer support to be found. The visual clutter sends confusing signals to the online shopper and ? and there is scant regard to the social dimension of shopping with a basic nod to Facebook here and a review tab or two there.

Compare all this with the trends and opportunities presented in PSFK?s Future of Retail report for 2012 ? the ?new brand champion? and ?retail on-demand?:

The new brand champion acts as not only an advocate, but an affiliate to your retail business. They use their social-savvy connections to advocate and sell on your behalf and profit themselves in the process. They also provide vital input into the product rage, design offers (think ?crowdsourced buyers?) and deliver shopper-to-shopper customer service.
Retail on-demand is the fully digital experience ? delivered by ANY connected device. Shoppers trade their data for better, more tailored options and service ? from auto-curated shopping to ?fit with a click? technology that takes the guess work out of online purchases.

Clearly, Australian retail is some distance away from this type of experience. But it?s not the trend or distance from the trend to the reality that most concerns me. It?s the lack of vision. The trends point in a fundamentally different direction from that followed by Australian retailers. The trends are focused on the customer experience and are centred on the customer journey. For the most part, Australian retail barely acknowledges the existence of the customer. We won?t be able to fix Retail until we fix retail. It?s time to get back to the customer experience.

FDA approves new weight-loss drug

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the diet drug Qsymia, the agency's latest move to give doctors and their patients more tools to fight excessive weight gain as obesity rates continue to bulge in the U.S. and around the world.

An advisory panel voted 20 to two to approve the drug in February, the first time the FDA voted to approve a weight-loss drug in more than a decade. Originally known as Qnexa, the FDA required Vivus, the manufacturer of the drug, to change its name in order to prevent its confusion with other drugs with similar-sounding names. Data presented by the company showed that it helped patients lose about 10 percent of their body weight.

The committee's recommendation and Tuesday's approval by the FDA drew both praise and criticism, reflecting concern over the drug's side effects as well as the need to give patients more choices beyond diet, exercise and bariatric surgery.

"Considering the heavy toll of obesity in our society, this agent has tremendous potential," said Dr. Chip Lavie, medical director of cardiac rehab and prevention at the Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans.

"I do think it will help a subpopulation lose weight. However, I am concerned that mass marketing of this drug will perpetuate the magic bullet approach to weight loss, which is limiting and does not address the root problem," said Dr. Gerard Mullin, an associate professor at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

About one-third of Americans are obese, and many have chronic, expensive medical conditions as a result, such as heart disease, diabetes and arthritis. Until recently, the array of available options has been frustratingly sparse for many doctors and their patients: diet, exercise and, for those overweight enough to qualify, bariatric surgery.

"I think it's clear from current research that there are problems with weight-regulating mechanisms in the brain that make it difficult for people to lose and maintain weight," said Dr. Louis Aronne, director of the Comprehensive Weight Control Program at New York Presbyterian Hospital. "We need to come to that realization that we're better off treating people who are obese than blaming them."

Weight loss was a struggle for Meg Evans, a 63-year-old mother of four in San Diego, until she took Qsymia. She said she was the quintessential jock in high school and college: physically active, involved in sports and always staying fit and trim. After she had her children, she started to put on weight.

Evans said she tried several diets over the years and continued to stay active, playing goalie for her soccer team. But she couldn't seem to get the scale to tick downward.

"My weight was inching up and up, and by 2007, I was at 230 pounds. I was not OK with that," she said.

When her doctor told her for the first time that her blood pressure was high, Evans realized it was time to try something different. Her doctor recommended that she enroll in the clinical trials for Qsymia, and she readily agreed.

She started taking the drug in February 2008 and also worked with a counselor once a week to develop a diet and exercise plan.

"Once I did those three things, I started losing that weight," Evans said.

By March 2009, she had lost 48 pounds. She said the only noticeable effect of the drug was that it decreased her hunger pangs.

"Honestly, I thought I was on the placebo. I really thought I was doing it myself," she said. "For me, there was just not that need to eat."

Qsymia is a combination of two FDA-approved drugs: phentermine, a stimulant related to the amphetamines that suppresses the appetite, and topiramate, a drug used to treat migraines and epilepsy that has weight-loss side effects. Vivus emphasizes that the drug is intended to be used in combination with diet and exercise.

In June, the FDA approved another diet drug, lorcaserin or Belviq. The drug is also an appetite suppressant and intended for patients who are obese and have one additional weight-related health problem, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol. However, studies of Belviq found that patients lost about 4 percent of their body weight, compared with the 10 or 12 percent lost by Qsymia patients.

But Qsymia is not without drawbacks. When Qsymia's manufacturer, Vivus, initially submitted the drug for approval in 2010, the FDA voted it down, citing concerns over the potential for dangerous heart problems, birth defects and cognitive effects such as mental fogginess or lack of concentration in patients taking the drug.

The 2012 panel voted to approve the drug only with Vivus' assurances that the company would provide detailed information to physicians about the risks of the drug and how to manage them.

Still, doctors are mixed in their concern over the potential for side effects, particularly in light of the history of diet drugs, such as fen-phen, approved by the FDA, then withdrawn from the market over concerns about heart risks and other dangerous side effects.

"Honestly, I won't be surprised if adverse effects over time result in a reversal of the approval," said Dr. David Katz, director of the Yale Prevention Research Center. "But in the interim, it will help some people lose weight, and many others will try it, dislike it and stop, and gain the weight back."

Evans said she's gained about 20 pounds since she stopped taking Qsymia in 2009. She said the gain is due in part to an injury to her Achilles tendon that has kept her from being as active as she was. But she said she would definitely consider taking it again to help her bring her weight down.

"Just to know that it's available if I need it, that's a real nice little prize," she said.

Digital Death | SevenPonds Blog

Lately, you may have noticed there?s been a fair amount of discussion bubbling up about digital death. Facebook has just introduced a new app called Evertalk that provides FB memorial pages. Yesterday, the San Francisco Chronicle ran an article called Death Doesn?t Stop Social Networking, and two weeks ago in The New York Times there was Digital Diary: Talking About Death Online; just to name a few. Given that my finger is always on the end-of-life pulse, it?s all familiar to me. I also recently experienced a friend?s death on Facebook. After dying of breast cancer, family and friends flooded to her husband?s Facebook page to offer words of condolence. And yesterday a new and unexpected digital death experience hit me in the face.

While web searching, I stumbled on a new interface for the White Pages. It allows you to search and find out how many others like you, with your name, are in the U.S. When I searched myself, there were 7 Suzette Sherman?s. I searched various people I knew and then I searched for someone I?ve always wondered about ? my best friend from grade school, Musette. I had not seen her since we were 14 years old. Here?s what came up:

Yes, zero Musette Keim?s in the US. I saw the number (or lack thereof) ?0,? and time stopped still for me. Musette and I were exactly the same age and were inseparable grade school friends. Due to our friendship, I remember those few years that we were close friends as the most peaceful years of my childhood. Then life took her away from me. Her father?s business took off, and her family moved out into the country. They built a new, bigger house in a more affluent area. That following summer my parents took me to visit her, but we were so young and the distance too far to maintain a friendship. Shortly after that her parents divorced, her father?s business continued to expand and I heard they shipped her off to boarding school in Switzerland. I remember feeling sad for her. Even then I was aware that boarding school is what I consider a legal form of child abandonment.

Years passed and after college I heard word that Musette had Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and was not doing well. That?s the kind of news life tosses you, forcing you to learn a lesson. Mine was that life was indeed not fair. Of all my girlhood playmates, how could it be Musette who?d get a debilitating disease? She was kind, gentle and never engaged in ?mean girl? games. Of course, her having MS stuck with me all these years; it was just so painfully unfair.

The shock of her being gone from this earth was one thing to absorb, but to see a ?0? seemed terribly wrong. She was not a zero at all! She had been a kind, incredibly wonderful person ? especially in those most formative years. Knowing she was gone and seeing that 0 made me cry.

I realized I had suddenly found myself fully in the digital age. The consideration of a possible tombstone located somewhere with her name on it, is just not what happens today. Instead her name comes up on the internet (or lack thereof) with the truth that someone is no more ? and it strikes hard. In the past, I would have spent my life wondering about her. Now with the advances of the Internet, there are gains and losses. What we lose is mystery and all the former unknowns we used to wonder a lifetime about. Is this good or bad? Who knows? All I know is, given Musette?s character, all forces should have aligned to allow her to live a life as long as I have. But then, yes I know, life is not fair.

Digital death what it is, I?m simply a person with feelings confronted by our digital highway; and have you noticed the cars are moving really fast at us?

It's rats vs. penguins on contested Chilean island

ISLOTE PAJARO NINO, Chile (AP) ? A 3-week-old Humboldt Penguin gazes plaintively from the opening of its nest, waiting for its parents to return with food. They may be out hunting for fish. But if they take much longer, they might not have a chick to provide for.

Invading rats with bodies up to 8 inches (20 centimeters) long have begun eating eggs and chicks, and some experts fear that unless the rats are eradicated, they could tip the Humboldt penguin toward extinction.

These penguins with distinctive black bands across their chests also are threatened by changing sea currents, fierce gulls and nesting pelicans whose relatively heavy bodies collapse their shallow earthen caves. And the biggest peril has been the nets of fishing boats that trap and suffocate the adults, at least until now.

"The cause of the decline in the penguin population is man," said bird veterinarian Paula Arce. "And of its eggs ... That could be the rats."

The Humboldt population has dropped from hundreds of thousands decades ago to below 45,000, said Alejandro Simeone, who directs the Ecology and Biodiversity Department at Andres Bello University in Santiago, Chile's capital.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature has had the penguins on its vulnerable list since 1988.

Humboldt penguins nest only on several dozen coastal islands scattered along more than 1,000 miles (kilometers) of the Chilean and Peruvian coastline. They traditionally forage close by their homes, often mate for life and reproduce twice a year, a pair of eggs at a time. Hatchlings weigh as little as 2.3 ounces (65 grams) and are covered in a soft, grey down. They are utterly dependent on their parents for 10 perilous weeks until they can feed themselves at sea.

The father and mother take turns sitting on them while the other ventures into the ocean for food, usually never leaving the little ones alone. But they depend on the frigid Humboldt current to deliver sardines and other tasty fish from Antarctica, and the current has moved farther off the coast in recent years. Foraging now requires longer journeys, exposing their hatchlings to predators.

The Zoological Society of Milwaukee and the county zoo it sponsors, which includes a small Humboldt penguin exhibit, has spent more than $200,000 researching the birds' plight over the years, paying for annual population surveys and providing small stipends to Chilean researchers to make regular visits to the breeding grounds.

That money also supported research published in the March Journal of Ornithology that suggested rats could be devouring penguin eggs at a devastating rate.

Simeone and bird veterinarians Arce and Maximiliano Daigre put boiled chicken eggs in empty penguin nests at Islote Pajaro Nino and discovered that 50 percent were quickly eaten by Norway Rats, while gulls, a more traditional predator, took just 16 percent. The experiment was repeated on another coastal Chilean island, where Black Rats had destroyed 70 percent just 12 hours later.

Simeone said some of the rats that reach Islote Pajaro Nino, or "Bird Child Island," come from the Algarrobo resort on Chile's coast, where millionaire residents keep yachts in a sheltered harbor and spend their summers surrounded by elegant flowered gardens.

The gardens attracted the rats, and a 260-foot (80-meter) breakwater built in 1977 to protect the boats connected the mainland to the island, providing the long-tailed rodents with easy access to what had been the exclusive domain of seabirds. Not that they need it. The rats are capable of swimming several hundred meters (yards) or sneaking onto boats, which may have brought the rodents to some of the other islands where penguins nest much further from the mainland.

In other parts of the world, such rats have been eradicated using toxic bait that is harmless to birds, but applying such methods here would be complex and costly, Simeone said.

Roberta Wallace, the lead veterinarian at the Milwaukee Zoo who has done research on the Humboldt penguins on the island, said it would take poison, and many repeated visits to offshore islands, to break the rats' reproductive cycle. Concerted conservation efforts would be necessary to keep them away.

"You'd have to pay someone to go out there every day or week to eliminate the rats," said Wallace. "It's not like putting out poison once and everything dies. You'd have to keep at it, because they breed like crazy, and you'd have to make sure you don't do damage to other species. It's logistically a huge challenge." ?

Chile has banned the hunting of penguins through 2024, and since 1978, Islote Pajaro Nino has been one of several sanctuaries established by the government to protect them. Peru also has created sanctuaries and tried to keep predatory animals from critical nesting grounds. But neither country has barred small-scale fishing in the waters surrounding the nesting grounds, and thousands of penguins continue to die in nets each year ? as many as 50 at a time in a single net, Arce said.

There's also no Chilean government budget dedicated to protecting penguins from the rats. It was only last week, Simeone said, that he was contacted by officials of the national fisheries service and environment ministry to discuss the situation. Neither agency responded to requests for comment.

How much better will that Samsung Galaxy Note be when you have Ice Cream Sandwich on it? AT&T users are about to find out, as Samsung confirmed to us that the long-awaited upgrade will be knocking on their doors beginning tomorrow (with a few lucky testers getting it later today). As for the new features, the Galaxy Note's latest refresh won't offer anything we weren't already expecting: in addition to the standard suite of ICS features, it'll also come with the same Premium Suite we saw show up on the international Note a couple months ago. The new Suite offers some huge improvements in S-Memo and S-Note, as the latter is now integrated with Wolphram Alpha. Sadly, the software features we've seen highlighted in the Galaxy S III series (S-Beam, S-Voice, Smart Stay and so on) are nowhere to be found, but at least you'll have plenty of other new items to keep you occupied for a while.

Dr. Gary L. Darmstadt: London Family Planning Summit: Not Business as Usual

The London Summit on Family Planning is fast-approaching on 11 July, and enormous efforts have already gone into mobilizing global support and commitments to increased access to voluntary family planning and creating frameworks for ensuring the highest-quality family planning programs, and monitoring these programs in new ways. We are all responsible - governments, donors, the private sector, academics, and civil society - for the commitments made on that day to increase the use of voluntary family planning among women in developing countries. And we all must be held accountable to ensure that this happens.

First, there are key questions we need to ask - and answer - in order to make sure women are provided the best care possible. How do we ensure that the decision to use family planning is voluntary? How do we ensure the highest quality of information, services, and contraceptives are provided?

The answers to these questions are critically important but are not found in the usual sources of data. These questions are about the quality of programs and care, and require that we build systemic monitoring into what actually happens when a woman seeking contraception gains access to a program providing contraception.

Quality of care is a core guiding principle of the London Summit on Family Planning. This means not only providing counseling on safe, effective methods of contraception but also providing access to a range of contraceptive methods from which clients can choose.

We all must be held accountable for fulfilling the promise to the poorest women and girls in the world of ensuring access to high-quality, voluntary family planning programs.

We need to know that health care providers are presenting all of the information needed for a woman to make the best decision for herself, and her family, and that the decision rests with her. This is the essence of the Quality of Care Framework that was introduced to the global family planning literature by Judith Bruce in 1990, and remains vital today. High quality care is also about ensuring that there is continuity of care with follow-up; and a connection to other types of health care services as well.

How do we make sure this is the kind of care that women and girls in the developing world have access to? Through a massive change in the way we're implementing and monitoring family planning programs. Monitoring contraceptive use in the world's poor countries is more than simply counting the increasing numbers of women who adopt injectables, IUDs, implants, or the pill from one month to the next. Doing that is hard enough, but the real challenge lies in putting in place and monitoring quality of care: holding ourselves accountable to the principle that clients remain the center of family planning services and decision-making.

The field of global family planning has a rich history of methodological advances. Measurement has been a strong point. The problem, however, is that the measurements and the data are unevenly distributed across countries and are not easily harnessed to present a holistic picture of what's happening.

Worse, when there is a picture presented, it's once every five years. We need to monitor progress, which means that we need to see results every 12 months. We need to produce valid estimates of contraceptive use much more often than we ever have in the past, and we need to do so while holding all stakeholders accountable to ensuring high-quality family planning care.

We can't do the same thing over and over and expect different results.

What will it look like on the ground if we achieve our collective goal?

Public health leaders and local leaders will be engaged in actively scrutinizing family planning services. Health centres in small villages, large cities, and everywhere in between, in the developing countries on which we're focused will never be out of stock of contraceptives. New technologies will be developed enabling each woman access to a modern contraceptive method that naturally fits her needs. Communities will take on a watchdog role to hold their government responsible for promises made. And, most importantly, women and girls will be empowered to have all of the information and options available in order to make informed and voluntary decisions on how to plan their families.

That would not be business as usual; that would be using different strategies in order to get different results. In order to get there, we all must be held accountable for fulfilling the promise to the poorest women and girls in the world of ensuring access to high-quality, voluntary family planning programs.
