6 Ways New & Emerging Music Artists Can Make The Most of Social ...

?

Social media has changed the way we discover, share and listen to music forever. There, I said it. Although it would appear that the music industry today is a collapsing giant, saturated with artists scrapping with all their might to sign a big record deal and get their records played, things are not as bad for new artists as it would seem. Whilst the collapse of the music industry as we once knew it may be true, in many ways the industry is now moving in a very positive and progressive way: fast paced; fresh; innovative; vibrant; and more importantly, is now very much in the hands of the artists and the fans themselves to push things forward and shape the industry. Certainly, in terms of the way we ?experience? new music, social media is fast becoming ?the? primary source. In fact, I would go as far as to say that, right now, as a result of the current engagement, activity and scope within social media, the music industry is an incredibly exciting place to be if you?re a new artist.?

In light of this, below are six ways that new artists can utilise social media to engage and interact with fans, raise awareness and create buzz around their content.

1.?SoundCloud?& the concept of the ?social download??- SoundCloud enables fans and artists to quickly and easily upload their tracks, create a music player for their their track or album and then easily share and embed this player across any of their social media channels. The SoundCloud player can also be set to enable people to download the track directly from the player or share the player within their own Facebook page, on their blog or website, or post the link to Twitter. Essentially, the widget can pretty much go anywhere, making it a fantastic tool for enabling people to share an artist?s tracks whatever their social network of choice. Another interesting feature of the SoundCloud player is that once the player is created, people can then comment on the track within the player itself as they listen to the song. Their comment is then integrated into the player and as more and more people share the track more and more comments pop up as people listen? almost transforming the player into a mini-social network of its own. More recently SoundCloud has also developed the concept of the ?social download? through a new app enabling artists to distribute their track for free in exchange for a social interaction from their fans. For example, the track is posted by the artist along with sharing buttons for Facebook and Twitter, the fan is then given the option to download the track for free simply by sharing the track on their own social network. This is a fantastic example of the way social media can be used as currency and is certainly a useful way for new artists to reward their fans for interactions and engagement.

2.?Blogging via WordPress / Tumblr?? As the world of music blogging continues to grow more and more each year, creating and managing a WordPress or Tumblr blog is an absolute must for new artists. Essentially, blogging platforms such as WordPress or Tumblr provide artists with all the tools they need to quickly and easily set up, design and launch their own website, without the need to learn a raft of code or outsource to a web design company. Moreover, blogs are a hugely effective platform to not only engage and interact with fans but also engage with music bloggers and journalists, often resulting in a feature on other blogs or blog posts being shared and re-posted to multiple social media networks. All of which ultimately lends itself to a much-welcomed increase in visibility and a fantastic opportunity for new artists to build and develop a strong online fan base.?Additionally, there is also a lot to be said for new artists that link up with tech-savy?PR companies?to help them take things even further within the world of blogging, as this can often prove to provide a fantastic push onto the radar of bigger blogs.

3.?Foursquare / GetGlue?- I?m convinced that we are not even close to seeing the best from location-based / check-in apps such as Foursquare and GetGlue yet. Especially when considering the huge potential that both apps present within the music industry as a way for new artists to interact and engage with fans on a new level. For example, artists can utilise Foursquare to extend the live show experience by integrating an exclusive Foursquare promotional offer alongside the live show. Fans checking in to a live show venue could be rewarded with exclusive tour-only tracks, live content or videos that would not be available elsewhere. Additionally, GetGlue can be used to reward fans for checking-in and sharing activities that relate to the artist, such as listening to new singles, albums or watching videos. Certainly, by enabling fans to unlock exclusive GetGlue stickers and promotional discounts, such as free downloads or free guest-list places to a live show is a fantastic way to utilise the current check-in trends to get fans interacting with the artist?s content.

4.?BandCamp???Through BandCamp artists are able to quickly and easily create their own online music store, where they can then create pages for all of their upcoming releases. Artists can upload singles or albums along with their artwork which BandCamp then creates widgets / players from. These players can then be embedded within Facebook walls, Tumblr posts and online sites enabling fans to stream tracks and post to their own social networks. However, what makes BandCamp such a fantastic social media tool is the feature for artists to distribute their music and downloads to fans through a ?name your price? or (free) download option. Essentially, a BandCamp player can be posted to Facebook, shared across multiple fan Facebook walls with tracks then directly distributed to fans straight from the artist. Interestingly enough, even in a world filled with free downloads, a large number of fans, when given the option to ?name their price? will pay for an artist?s tracks. Not only this, but given the option, an even bigger number of fans will share or post an artist?s tracks to their own followers ? and it is this feature that really is changing the way new music is discovered and experienced.

5.?Twitter -?Through Twitter new artists can stay in touch with their audience, engage and interact with fans, build relationships with online music press and music bloggers, announce tours and news and give away exclusive links to new tracks. More recently we have also seen that more mainstream artists are taking note of the potential of Twitter by using their feeds to give away exclusive videos, images and mp3 downloads to their followers. Two great examples of this in particular are those of MIA and Kanye West. Creating a new music video on her smartphone, MIA Tweeted the video to her millions of Twitter fans rather than following the more traditional approach of launching a video. Additionally, Kanye West took to Twitter when it came to the launch of his latest ?My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy? album, Tweeting album art, track listings, videos and even giving away a free track every Friday through his Twitter feed as part of his?G.O.O.D. Fridays?campaign. Needless to say, both campaigns were hugely successful. Interestingly, Twitter also presents the option for artists to utilise the ?Tweet for a Track? app, whereby fans get a free download for Tweeting or posting an artist?s track. Again, a fantastic way to both reward fan interaction and increase awareness.

6.?Facebook?? Facebook really is a perfect platform for discovering and sharing new music, and one that an ever increasing number of new artists are looking to now when it comes to interacting with fans and sharing their latest tracks. By setting up a Facebook page or BandPage and promoting these through other social platforms such as Twitter and Tumblr, Facebook really can become a centralised place that integrates multiple?online PR?activities. For example, Facebook is a perfect place for artists to share their tracks via SoundCloud and BandCamp players, upload new music videos or behind-the-scenes studio footage, announce tours and news, and event create events and tour apps to give away guest-list places at live shows ? pretty much anything you can think of. Most importantly, is the fact that much like Twitter, Facebook enables new artists to develop a much more personalised connection with their audience and interact with their fans in a way that wasn?t possible before.

It?s no secret that people love discovering new music and sharing their discoveries with friends ? there?s something particularly rewarding about being able to recommend a new artist before anyone else has heard of them yet and this sentiment goes way back. It?s no surprise then that social media presents a fantastic opportunity for new artists to connect and interact with their fans in a way that didn?t exist before. Making it easy for fans to share content is key and through new platforms such as BandCamp and SoundCloud artists really are able to get their music out into the big wide world. Taking the time to pull everything together and integrate multiple social media activities as well as nurture relationships with fans will ultimately lead to artists successfully growing their fan base in a way that up until recently really wasn?t in the hands of the artist.

Soon-To-Be-Acquired BlueSprig?s AirCover Family Locator Is An App That Lets You Track Those Close To You

aircover family locatorWe last heard about AirCover -- an app developed by Founders Den co-founder Jason Johnson's own startup BlueSprig -- when it launched as an all-in-one protection assistant, letting people secure their devices from viruses, back up files, locate a lost iPhone or Android handset, track family members, and more. Fast forward to today, and Blue Sprig is launching the first offshoot of that flagship product, AirCover Family Locator, which takes the people-tracking element and extends it into a standalone app. But while you often hear of spinoffs coming out of the success of the original app, it seems that the opposite is the case here.

Sony makes Olympus rescue pact official with $645 million investment

Olympus hangs $57 million loss on austerity, strong yen and declining compact camera market

After months of speculation about who would step in to save the scandal-ridden Olympus' rocky fortunes, Sony has finally opened up its checkbook. The two companies are entering into a "business and capital alliance," with Sony pumping in $650 million to its former rival. In exchange, it's gaining a seat on the company's board and a 51 percent stake in a new joint venture based on Olympus's coveted medical imaging tech -- something Kaz Hirai outlined in his "One Sony" strategy. The deal also includes a component-sharing agreement in the photography space, with Olympus mirror cells and camera lenses being given to Sony, while image sensors (where Sony is very strong) will go the other way.

Tourists among 19 killed in fiery Nepal plane crash

A plane carrying 19 people crashed shortly after taking off in Katmandu, Nepal, catching fire and killing all on board. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

By NBC News wire services

KATMANDU, Nepal -- A plane carrying trekkers to the Everest region crashed and caught fire just after takeoff Friday in Nepal's capital, killing 19 people.

The victims included British, Chinese and Nepali passengers, authorities said.

The pilot of the domestic Sita Air flight reported trouble two minutes after takeoff, and Katmandu airport official Ratish Chandra Suman said the pilot appeared to have been trying to turn back.?

The crash site is only 547 yards from the airport, and the wrecked plane was pointing toward the airport area.

Reuters said it was a twin-engine, propeller-driven Dornier aircraft.

Investigators were trying to determine the cause of the crash and identify the bodies. Suman said he could not confirm if the plane was already on fire before it crashed.

Villagers forced back by flames
Cellphone video shot by locals showed the front section of the plane was on fire when it first hit the ground and it appeared the pilot had attempted to land the plane on open ground beside a river.

The fire quickly spread to the rear, but the tail was still in one piece at the scene near the Manohara River on the southwest edge of Katmandu.

PhotoBlog: More images from the crash site?

Villagers were unable to approach the plane because of the fire and it took some time for firefighters to reach the area and bring the fire under control.

Nepal officials: 6 survive, 15 killed as plane hits mountain in Himalayas

Soldiers and police shifted through the crash wreckage looking for bodies and documents to help identify the victims.

Seven passengers were British and five were Chinese; the other four passengers and the three crew members were from Nepal, authorities said.

Large numbers of local people and security forces gathered at the crash site. The charred bodies were taken by vans to the hospital morgue.

Gateway to Everest
The weather in Katmandu and surrounding areas was clear on Friday morning, and it was one of the first flights to take off from Katmandu's Tribhuwan International Airport. Other flights reported no problems, and the airport operated normally.

The plane was heading for Lukla, the gateway to Mount Everest. Thousands of Westerners make treks in the region around the world's highest peak each year. Autumn is considered the best time to trek the foothills of the Himalayan peaks.

In May, 15 people were killed when their plane crashed into a hill in northwest Nepal.

Autumn is the peak tourism season in Nepal, which has eight of the world's 14 highest mountains, including Mount Everest. At least 11 people were killed in an avalanche in northwest Nepal on Sunday.

Apple CEO Tim Cook writes open letter to customers concerning iOS 6 Maps

Apple CEO Tim Cook has posted an open letter to customers on Apple.com concerning iOS 6 Maps. iOS 6 Maps, which replaced the original, Google-powered iOS Maps app with one that drew data from TomTom and others, but which was more wholly owned, controlled, and realized by Apple, has been the subject of controversy since launch due to the quality of data in many areas.

In the open letter, Cook apologizes for the current state of iOS 6 maps, and even goes so far as to recommend competing products from the App Store and the web. He also assures iOS 6 users that Apple will be working "non-stop" to make iOS 6 Maps live up to Apple's standards. (If you want to help Apple improve it, you can submit corrections using the built-in tools.)

Apple began buying map-releated companies in 2009. Earlier this year, iMore learned Apple planned to remove as much of Google from the core of iOS as possible, including at the location data level. It later became known that Apple and Google had been feuding for some time over features, branding, and data usage in the original maps app.

Interestingly, in a poll of iMore readers conducted last now, more than 50 percent reported a positive outlook on maps. Back before iOS 6 Maps was even announced, iMore reported on the realities of Apple's the upcoming Maps product, trying to set realistic expectations. That report now seems to have been largely accurate.

Due to the nature and importance of the problems with iOS 6 Maps, mainstream news organizations have been reporting on it throughout the last week. When that happens, Apple typically knows they have to issue a statement and take back control of the story. Previous open letters have included the iPhone 4 "antennagate", the lack of Flash plugin support in iOS, the health of Apple's late CEO, Steve Jobs, and the use of DRM (digital rights management) on iTunes music. In other words, It's a BIG DEAL and a very public sign that Apple is taking a situation very seriously.

Google is expected to release a version of their popular Maps product into the iOS App Store eventually, although they're playing it coy at this point. The deeper problem Apple still has to address is -- how could Apple let this happen? How could Apple release a product that could reasonably be seen to have this consequence, without internally identifying and pre-emptively addressing it at either of their two announcement events, WWDC or the iPhone 5 event, and how could they let the story run away from them for a over a week before responding? This isn't a case of measuring a response to an unforeseeable situation twice and cutting it loose to the press and public once. This is a case of risk assessment and mitigation gone wrong, and of brand currency expended.

Apple doesn't only have to fix maps, they have to fix the process that resulted in Tim Cook having to write this letter.

To our customers,

At Apple, we strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to our customers. With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment. We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better.

We launched Maps initially with the first version of iOS. As time progressed, we wanted to provide our customers with even better Maps including features such as turn-by-turn directions, voice integration, Flyover and vector-based maps. In order to do this, we had to create a new version of Maps from the ground up.

There are already more than 100 million iOS devices using the new Apple Maps, with more and more joining us every day. In just over a week, iOS users with the new Maps have already searched for nearly half a billion locations. The more our customers use our Maps the better it will get and we greatly appreciate all of the feedback we have received from you.

While we?re improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app.

Everything we do at Apple is aimed at making our products the best in the world. We know that you expect that from us, and we will keep working non-stop until Maps lives up to the same incredibly high standard.

Tim Cook Apple?s CEO

Zamzee: Activity Monitor And Interactive Gaming Site Boost Physical ...

Who knew a digital game could motivate kids to exercise?

A new study sponsored by the nonprofit HopeLab and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation shows that kids who use an activity meter called a Zamzee and its corresponding game website over six months are 59 percent more active than those who don't.

The Zamzee, created by HopeLab, is a small device that works by monitoring movement and physical activity. That exercise information is then loaded onto a corresponding game website, where kids can go on to see how much they moved and earn points and rewards. (For more information about Zamzee, click here.)

"This study shows that technology is not just part of the problem; it can also be part of the solution in helping kids be more physically active," Steve Cole, Ph.D., the Vice President of Research and Development at HopeLab and a professor of medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, said in a statement.

The study, presented at the 2012 Obesity Society Annual Meeting, included 448 kids of middle-school age around the United States. Half of them were assigned to use the Zamzee and the corresponding game website for six months, while the other half used just the Zamzee but didn't have access to the website.

Researchers found that the kids who used the Zamzee and the website completed 59 percent more exercise each week than those who didn't have access to the motivational gaming website. Specifically, those who used Zamzee and the website exercised about 118 minutes each week, while those who just used the Zamzee exercised about 74 minutes each week, Scientific American reported.

Plus, kids who were overweight exercised 27 percent more and girls exercised 103 percent more when they used the Zamzee and the website, researchers found.

All of this extra exercise translated into actual effects on the body, too -- use of the Zamzee was linked with decreases in "bad" LDL cholesterol levels in the kids, as well as better blood sugar control, the researchers found.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, kids should be getting at least an hour of aerobic exercise (like running) every day, as well as at least three days a week of muscle-strengthening exercises (like push-ups) and bone-strengthening exercises (like jumprope).

  • Jump Rope

Constantly on the go? "Stick it in your bag," says Patel. "It's something you can do anywhere you are." A solo jump-rope workout, like this <a href="http://www.fitnessmagazine.com/workout/arms/express/jump-rope-workouts/" target="_hplink">10-minute sculpting routine</a> from <em>Fitness</em> magazine, can burn over 100 calories, and tone the shoulders, chest arms and legs. Some gyms even offer <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jordan-turgeon/jump-rope-workout_b_1235545.html" target="_hplink">jump-rope fitness classes</a>. Or, if a less structured jump sounds more like your thing, grab some friends for some Double Dutch. <br><br> <em>Flickr photo by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/adwriter/5826718940/" target="_hplink">adwriter</a></em>

  • Hula Hoop

While she's recently taken to <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/12/12/michelle-obama-jumping-jacks-world-record_n_1143016.html" target="_hplink">jumping jacks</a>, First Lady Michelle Obama is a big proponent of hula hooping as a fun way to get active. In 2009, she <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/22/best-michelle-obama-photo_n_328933.html" target="_hplink">performed 142 "swivels"</a> before dropping her hoop at a healthy kids fair at the White House, the AP reported. But it's not just for kids! And now, with weighted hoops, hula hooping can produce even more dramatic results. It <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/19/weight-loss-success-jen-moore_n_1341791.html" target="_hplink">helped Jen Moore lose 140 pounds</a>. "It's something you can do in front of the TV," says Patel, "rain or shine!" <br><br> <em>Flickr photo by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/stringberd/929274139/" target="_hplink">stringberd</a></em>

  • Play On The Playground

"You may be surprised how much you actually <a href="http://www.seventeen.com/health/tips/outdoor-workout-ideas" target="_hplink">work your arms and abs while on the swings</a>," National Academy of Sports Medicine instructor Rick Richey told Seventeen.com. You'll work leg muscles climbing the stairs up to the slide and arms and abs from swinging from the monkey bars, he added. <br><br> <em>Flickr photo by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/colorblindpicaso/2540688582/" target="_hplink">colorblindPICASO</a></em>

  • Dance

There's a reason so many celebs have <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/25/dancing-with-the-stars-gladys-knight_n_1452199.html" target="_hplink">slimmed down during stints on reality TV show "Dancing With The Stars."</a> Dancing is a serious cardio workout -- but can feel more like a party. "Dance, in my opinion, is one of the best ways to get in shape, as you're working multiple muscle groups all at the same time that in turn keeps your body constantly challenged," fitness expert <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/09/dancing-with-the-stars-health-weight-loss_n_1411588.html" target="_hplink">Tracey Mallett told HuffPost in April</a>. <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/12/first-zumba-class_n_1418895.html" target="_hplink">Try a class like Zumba</a>, or burn calories more surreptitiously with salsa lessons or a night on the town! <br><br> <em>Flickr photo by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/audihertz/6022929764/" target="_hplink">John Bollwitt</a></em>

  • Skate

Ice skating, one of our <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/12/03/winter-workouts_n_1125504.html" target="_hplink">favorite winter workouts</a>, can burn up to 500 calories an hour. Inline skating can burn over <a href="http://www.health.com/health/gallery/0,,20420506_2,00.html" target="_hplink">400 calories in just 30 minutes</a>, according to Health.com, thanks to the side-to-side movement in your lower body, plus the way your core engages to keep you balanced. You'll also seriously work the smaller <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/12/28/winter-fitness-outside-seasonal-sports_n_1171917.html#s577032&title=6_Ice_Skating" target="_hplink">lower-body muscles</a> that play key roles in keeping you upright. <br><br> <em>Flickr photo by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/kcolwell/2433110916/" target="_hplink">kcolwell</a></em>

  • Skip-It

Who can forget this classic '80s fitness fad? The ankle hoop counted rotations as the user swung the attached ball around and around and around. <em>TIME</em> named the Skip-It one of the <a href="http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,2049243_2048660_2049212,00.html" target="_hplink">100 greatest toys of all time</a>. Not only is it a cardio workout similar to jump-roping, you'll also engage the core and lower-body muscles used for balance. <br><br> <em>Flickr photo by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/zingersb/161779921/" target="_hplink">zingersb</a></em>

  • Hopscotch

Think outside the sidewalk-chalk box! You can mix up traditional hopscotch jumps by moving side to side as if hitting each corner of a square, as shown in <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFJpIjYfydw" target="_hplink">this Exercise.com video</a> or by focusing on <a href="http://fitbie.msn.com/exercise/hopscotch-men" target="_hplink">balancing on one foot</a>, according to FitBie. Think of hopscotch as essentially a <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/23/plyometrics-workout_n_1399766.html" target="_hplink">plyometrics workout</a>, which has been shown to <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12627298?ordinalpos=1&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum" target="_hplink">improve running performance</a>. You can even hop <a href="http://mizfitonline.com/2010/12/15/five-reasons-you-need-to-hopscotch/" target="_hplink">indoors with masking tape</a>, suggests popular fitness blogger MizFit. <br><br> <em>Flickr photo by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bkoger/4791448741/" target="_hplink">Brandon Koger</a></em>

  • Pogo Stick

While it will undoubtedly take some practice to work up to 10 minutes of jumping on a pogo stick at a time, it can be a fun cardio workout, burning <a href="http://www.thatsfit.com/2009/12/02/pogosticking-for-weightloss/ " target="_hplink">20 to 40 calories in those 10 minutes</a>. Pogo stick company Vurtego claims celebrity fans such as <a href="http://thearcmagazine.com/play/0908/" target="_hplink">Matthew McConaughey and Allison Hannigan</a>. Just make sure to practice on a flat, open area and consider wearing some protective gear in case there are tumbles! <br><br> <em>Flickr photo by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/seandreilinger/4819534221/" target="_hplink">sean dreilinger</a></em>

  • Moon Shoes

The <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OaMY8XakxQ8" target="_hplink">"anti-gravity" shoes</a> popular in the '80s just may be the precursor to today's <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/08/12/kangoo-jumps-mario-godiva-green_n_924580.html" target="_hplink">Kangoo Jumps</a>, running boots of a sort with springs on the soles, used in classes at various gyms and by solo adventurous fitness fans. But that bounce isn't only playful, it's also an easier workout on your joints than running or jumping. Kangoo Jumps <a href="http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=news/health&id=7497802" target="_hplink">absorb up to 80 percent of the shock</a>, Beth Kruper, a Kangoo Jumps rep, told ABC. And they may up the calorie burn, too. "When you run in them you're using more muscles than you would in sneakers," Kruper said. "So if you usually burn 100 calories in a mile, you'll burn 130 to 140." <br><br> <em>Flickr photo by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/mamarazzi/6865835105/" target="_hplink">magnificent momma</a></em>

  • Paintball Or Laser Tag

Take group fitness to a competitive level with an outing to a nearby paintball or laser tag arena. Calif. bans Facebook snooping by employers

13 hrs.

SACRAMENTO???Californians who use social media like Twitter and Facebook have a little more privacy protection from employers or universities who may want access to usernames or passwords after the governor signed two bills into law on Thursday.

Job applicants and employees will have protection from employers who demand their login credentials to social media platforms or personal e-mail accounts, according to one of the bills, authored by Assembly member Nora Campos, a Democrat from San Jose.

Employers are barred from firing or disciplining those who refuse to give up any information related to their social media accounts.

"The Golden State is pioneering the social media revolution and these laws will protect all Californians from unwarranted invasions of their personal social media accounts," Gov. Jerry Brown said in a statement released after he shared the news on Twitter, Facebook, and other social media accounts.

Brown also signed a similar bill by state Sen. Leland Yee, a Democrat from San Francisco, prohibiting colleges or universities from demanding user names, passwords, or other identifying information from students, prospective students and student groups.

That bill, according to Brown's office, came in response to a "growing trend" of schools "snooping into student social media accounts, particularly those of student athletes."

Both laws go into effect on Jan. 1.?

Everybody always needs to do a bit of home improvement whether it is in the bathroom, kitchen, garden or bedroom a household everywhere is always ready for a little home improvement. Home improvement can sound like a chore something you have to do rather than what you want to do and we all know that when we need to do it, it is no longer appealing but when we want to do something we can easily find the time and money.

Home Improvement is a great DIY option as it allows you to make the changes to your home in your own time, do it your own way and within the guidelines of your own budget. Home improvement can be as little as fixing a loose screw in the wall, to replacing a washing machine, to re-designing your kitchen. Wickes is a great starting point to find out what you will need, why you need it and how much it will cost you to do it.

Fixing up your home has become a weekend ritual for many couples or families who are waiting to sell their property and while they wait they make the sensible decision to make small home improvement to

CanWeNetwork: Creating Business Relationships Through Geo ...

Find new and relevant business contacts, no matter where you're located.

Foursquare is a great app for messing around with and letting friends know where you are and what?s going on. That geo-spatial technology could be used for much more useful means, however. How about as a business networking tool for when you?re at a conference or simply flying out from LAX and want to hook up with some like minded business people? That might sound a little like a form of dating app but networking is extremely important in all walks of business. Recently released app, CanWeNetwork, hopes to take out much of the stress of meeting up with folks.

The app works using a LinkedIn login to ensure that its users can find like minded people around them, whether they happen to be. Users can then introduce themselves through the app before physically meeting up. Using some quite impressive matching algorithms, the app finds matches according to skills, experience, interests, education, location and personality.

It?s clever stuff and having used it, I can confidently say that it found some appropriate matches for me. I can only imagine how much more useful it would become in a large public arena. Besides being able to see where the person is located at the current time, it?s very simple to connect via LinkedIn through the app.

We checked in with company evangelist James Sinclair to learn more about CanWeNetwork and plans going forward.

148apps: What was the inspiration behind making the app?
James Sinclair: The inspiration behind this technology is that there are so many people that cross our paths every day that could be so relevant, so helpful, that we are just a second ? or a chance opportunity ? away from meeting. Our founders are road warriors and hardcore data scientists who looked at this as a problem to solve. They believe the evolution that this market ? of business intelligence between people ? was a great opportunity to solve a real world problem in an underserved marketplace. It?s also an incredible journey of learning why people get on or why people work well together. This has been a big evolution of ideas, a few pivots, some hurdles and all the time building an engine first, a platform first as we identify the verticals and marketplaces for which it is viable.

148apps: How long did the matchmaking algorithm take to work out?
James Sinclair: We spent nearly a year building our recommendation engine. It?s at the heart of everything we do so it had to be amazing. Whilst a majority of users only care about the answer of ?good? or ?bad? match, and technically we could have shipped earlier with a less accurate or less complex engine, we are not trying to be a social network; we are trying to be a utility/tool and that requires delivering the right answer out the gate. We are a decision science company not an app company, and the real answer is we have not worked it out, it never stops, machine learning constantly trying to better itself, learn from the data, understand the reasoning and deliver strong results to our users. Usage drives intelligence.

148apps: Are there any plans to introduce other social network integration such as Facebook or Twitter?
James Sinclair: For us, we are thrilled to be part of the LinkedIn ecosystem. It is the largest, most robust and most intelligent business network on the planet and therefore makes it the first step on this journey for us. It is currently only one of the many data sets we pull, it just happens to be the only public one. We are actively looking at other networks, cross network integration and so forth, but we are very happy with the results we are currently getting that we are not racing to add more.

CanWeNetwork is available now for free. Why not let us know how you get on with finding appropriate matches?

Anti-Muslim filmmaker's probation case creeps on

(AP) ? The federal probation violation investigation targeting the man behind the anti-Muslim video inflaming the Middle East is proceeding slowly and privately, reflecting the explosiveness of the case.

Federal officials have said nothing publicly about the case, and neither has Nakoula Basseley Nakoula's attorney. Nakoula has put his home up for sale and gone into hiding since violence erupted over the 14-minute YouTube trailer for "Innocence of Muslims," a crudely made film that portrays the Muhammad as a religious fraud, womanizer and pedophile.

Enraged Muslims have demanded punishment for Nakoula, and dozens have died in violent protests linked to the movie. A Pakistani cabinet minister on Monday offered a $100,000 bounty to anyone who kills Nakoula.

Meantime, First Amendment advocates have defended Nakoula's right to make the film even while condemning its content. President Barack Obama echoed those sentiments Tuesday in a speech at the United Nations.

"We understand why people take offense to this video because millions of our citizens are among them. I know there are some who ask, 'Why don't we just ban such a video?'" he said. "The answer is enshrined in our laws. Our Constitution protects the right to practice free speech."

Against that backdrop, federal officials are looking into whether Nakoula, 55, violated probation for a 2010 check fraud conviction by uploading the trailer to YouTube. Nakoula was sentenced to 21 months in prison and ordered not to use computers or the Internet for five years without approval from his probation officer.

If he's found in violation, he could be returned to prison. If not, he'll remain free. Either way, federal officials will face criticism, either from those who say Nakoula's free speech rights were trampled or from those who believe he should have been punished for inciting violence with the video.

"This case breaks the mold," said Mark Werksman, a defense attorney in Los Angeles and a former federal prosecutor. "If the video hadn't gone viral, and caused the Arabic world to blow up, who would care if this guy is using YouTube? It's all about politics with this guy."

Because of the international complexity, probation officials handling the case are taking plenty of time to make a decision and likely are getting input from throughout the federal government, said Lawrence Rosenthal, a professor at Chapman University's School of Law in Orange.

"My best guess is decisions about this case are going to be made at very high levels," Rosenthal said, surmising federal prosecutors, Justice Department headquarters and even the State Department may be weighing in.

Steven Seiden, a defense attorney representing Nakoula in the probation matter, did not reply to questions by email Tuesday and has not replied to several written requests for an interview with him or his client. The U.S. attorney's office declined to comment.

In most federal cases, a probation officer who decides someone has committed a serious violation submits a confidential report to the sentencing judge, who then can pursue a probation revocation hearing ? a mini-trial of sorts ? where probation officials must prove the violation.

If the judge finds the individual in violation, the court can return the defendant to probation, send him to prison or impose additional terms of probation without prison time.

Normal cases can move very quickly ? sometimes taking days ? once a probation officer has prepared a report, Werksman said. In this instance, however, the political and diplomatic ramifications likely have officials scrutinizing every step.

Probation officials first must be able to prove there was a violation, and that could mean a lengthy investigation into whether Nakoula or someone else posted the video on YouTube, said Heidi Rummel, a former federal prosecutor and criminal law professor at the University of Southern California's Gould School of Law.

In addition, the terms of Nakoula's supervised release indicate he was allowed to use computers with prior approval from his probation officer. It's possible he received approval to post the trailer for "Innocence of Muslims."

"Usually the probation officer will be most interested in preventing him from engaging in any kind of activity related to the original crime, so another factor would be what kind of permission did the probation officer give him?" she said. "Why would (the film) be of concern in a bank fraud case? That's a whole nother wrinkle."

If federal probation officials ? or those above them ? decide not to proceed against Nakoula, the public likely will never know what went into the decision or who was involved without a court proceeding, Rosenthal said.

If the case does go before a judge, Nakoula could argue he was singled out on a probation technicality for exercising his right to free speech, Rosenthal said.

Either way, the outcome to the investigation could take a long time and isn't as straightforward as it may seem, said Rummel, the former prosecutor.

The issues are unusual for the probation revocation context and the allegations may be difficult to prove," she said.

"It's not like they have a couple dirty drug tests and two weeks later they're in court."

New Foreclosure Activity and what you need to know about the Market

The market action index is a very important tool that we have supplied for our buyers and sellers of Santa Clarita real estate. ?In essence it tells our buyers and sellers what type of real estate market we are in within the Santa Clarita Valley cities.

Numbers closer to 30 indicate a sellers real estate market, where properties are selling at over asking price and where inventory is low with a lot of buyers wanting to press the trigger on buying homes.

Below 30 would indicate that we are in a Buyer?s market ? lots of inventory and where sellers are accepting offers at less than fair market value.

To visit our Market Action Index pages that we have prepared for our Santa Clarita real estate clientele ? go to the Main website for Santa Clarita Real Estate and type the letters ?MAI? into the MacBoX. ?That way you will be taken to the pages where we have embedded the links to the specific MAI?s for each of the Santa Clarita Valley cities.

Just a reminder ? make sure you are working with local Santa Clarita Real Estate experts. Not those that say they are but those that prove they are through the written word.

Outside groups making play to help Romney with ads

NEW YORK (AP) ? New Republican-leaning independent groups entered the presidential advertising fray Wednesday as polling suggests Mitt Romney's campaign may be losing ground against President Barack Obama in key swing states.

The commercials, aimed at voters who supported Obama in 2008 but are undecided now, join those from the campaigns and outside groups swamping a narrow and possibly shrinking map of competitive states in the fast-moving presidential contest.

Americans for Job Security launched an ad in six swing states as part of an $8.7 million ad buy disclosed last week. The group, which does not have to disclose its donors, has actively supported Republican congressional candidates but has stayed out of the presidential campaign until now. The Ending Spending Action Fund, a new conservative group bankrolled by billionaire Joe Ricketts, was set to debut a $10 million, four-state ad campaign beginning Thursday.

The two groups have joined a crowded field of players in a presidential advertising landscape that has largely narrowed to nine states: Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin. All are states Obama carried against Republican John McCain in 2008 but have been tightly contested this time.

A pro-Romney super PAC, Restore Our Future, is advertising in Michigan, while another Republican-leaning group, the American Future Fund, announced Wednesday it would run ads supporting Romney in Minnesota. But polling shows those states tilting heavily toward Obama and neither is considered a top-tier battleground this time because the candidates themselves aren't on the air in those states.

It's a vast change from 2008, when the Obama and McCain campaigns advertised in 21 states that were considered competitive. Several of those have seen virtually no advertising this year, including Arizona, Georgia, Indiana, Maine, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Polls show Georgia, Indiana, Missouri, Montana and West Virginia all safe for Romney this time ? Obama carried Indiana in 2008 but is not expected to again because he's not competing in earnest there ? while Maine, New Mexico and Pennsylvania are expected to favor the president as they did in 2008.

The decision by Romney's campaign and allied groups to abandon advertising in Pennsylvania particularly surprised political observers, since the state was a top battleground 2008 and is home to many of the white, working-class voters who polls show have been skeptical of Obama since his first run for the presidency. Pro-Romney independent groups including Crossroads GPS and Restore Our Future advertised there but have since pulled out, as did the pro-Obama group Priorities USA Action. Neither the Obama nor the Romney campaigns actively advertised in the state.

Elizabeth Wilner, vice president of the advertising tracking group Kantar/Campaign Media Analysis, said that except for the recent addition of Wisconsin as a battleground, the states that have seen presidential campaign advertising have not changed since the spring. Independent groups, not the Obama and Romney campaigns, have pushed to make states like Pennsylvania, Michigan and Minnesota and even Wisconsin more competitive, Wilner said.

"The cake was basically baked in May. The states you're seeing in play have stayed the same," Wilner said. "The candidates never made real investments in any other states. The independent groups are the first to go in to a state and the first to go out."

The ads from Americans for Job Security and the Ending Spending Action Fund are targeting disaffected Obama voters who may be persuaded to support Romney this time. They also focus on women, who polls show favor Obama by a wide margin in many swing states.

The Americans for Job Security ad, "Running," depicts a woman jogging with a baby stroller. She said she voted for Obama but is disillusioned by his economic policies and adds that her husband has been "laid off twice" during Obama's first term.

"Now we're facing another recession," she says in the ad. "The future is getting worse under President Obama." The ad is airing in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia.

The Ending Spending ad campaign was expected to launch ads Thursday in Virginia, Ohio, Iowa and Wisconsin. In one 60-second ad, female voters who backed Obama look into the camera and say they now regret their decision.

"I had huge hopes but ? you know what? ? I got burned in 2008," says a voter identified as Jodi C., a registered nurse from Illinois. "He has failed to address my two most important things, which are debt and divisiveness."

"I didn't feel that he was doing enough to unite the country," says a voter Connie F., a mother and grandmother of four from Green Bay, Wis.

In another spot, former Rep. Artur Davis of Alabama explains why he left the Democratic Party. "This year, I'm casting my vote for someone who can fix the problems facing us. That's Mitt Romney," Davis says in a 30-second ad that is part of the Ending Spending campaign.

Online, the voters expand on their reasons for voting against Obama.

"I'm a factory worker, just barely hanging on," says a voter identified as Anita L. from Woodville, Wis. "If Obama gets back in, there is no future for anybody."

The ads and videos were produced by Stephen Bannon, the conservative filmmaker behind Citizen United's recent documentary about disaffected voters, "The Hope and the Change." They are being paid for by Ricketts, the billionaire founder of the Nebraska-based TD Ameritrade Securities. Earlier this year he rejected overtures from some Republican strategists to fund an independent group that would run ads focusing on Obama's controversial former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

The Ricketts ads were set to be coupled with radio and online advertising, direct mail and door-to-door voter contact programs led by former Bush White House political director Sara Taylor Fagen.

Business security fears still a hurdle for BYOD - Computer Business ...

Tineka Smith Published 24 September 2012

Nearly 90% of UK IT managers say they are unable to ensure personal devices in the workplace meet their company security standards.

BYOD schemes

Despite the benefits of BYOD schemes, 67% of UK businesses were concerned that personal mobile devices pose a security threat to their business.

The study by Equanet revealed, however that for most UK businesses security checks have not been made mandatory and 92% of IT managers do not require employees to regularly change passwords on their devices used for work.

IT experts are encouraging businesses to implement company-wide BYOD policies and procedures to minimise potential security risks.

"Confidential, work-related information increasingly passes from work computer to personal device," said Charles Barratt, new solutions development manager at Equanet. "This trend can enhance the productivity of employees but needs to be managed. As soon as a device connects to a business's system, it should be subject to the same security safeguards as company equipment. A fully integrated BYOD scheme and policy is vital."

IT experts say that the interest of BYOD schemes among employees is increasing with 20% of companies having already implemented a BYOD policy for their business. There are many different BYOD options a company can introduce to their employees.

"A fully realised BYOD policy is beneficial for IT budgets, productivity and employee morale, however clear policies and strategies need to be in place to overcome any possible security issues," said Barratt.

Are there any fighters who can beat Jon Jones?

Jon Jones' win on Saturday night was awe-inspiring. He survived a grotesque armbar, and came back to win with fourth-round submission. He seems to keep getting better and better with each fight, this time incorporating jiu-jitsu skills into his win. At the moment, he appears unbeatable.

Are there any fighters in the UFC who can eventually take him on and win? Any fighters who can take time to study Jones, figure out his every move, and then finally solve the Jon Jones puzzle?

Dan Henderson: The one-time PRIDE and Strikeforce champion was supposed to fight Jones before he was injured and UFC 151 was canceled. He has already put in the time and effort to fight Jones, and may already have him figured out. His age is an issue, but Henderson still wants the fight.

Alexander Gustaffson: One of Jones' biggest advantages is his reach. He was able to hold Belfort at bay throughout the fight by simply extending his arm. At 6-foot-5, Gustafsson is an inch taller. He has a fight lined up with former champ Mauricio "Shogun" Rua who will show if "The Viking" is ready for the next step.

Chael Sonnen: Based on Sonnen's inability to handle Anderson Silva in their last fight, there is no reason to believe Sonnen could beat Jones. However, the run-up to the fight would be so much fun. Considering the UFC put Jones up against a middleweight who lost a title shot, integrity of the belt doesn't matter as much as entertainment or making money. Sonnen has already shown he can get under Jones' skin in a way no one else has, and that just may give him the edge in a bout.

Anderson Silva: Could he beat Jones? Yes. Will this fight ever, ever happen? No. Silva keeps talking about wanting a fight with welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, and he does have a few challenges waiting for him at middleweight.
