In resorting to the trending but trite action-comedy genre, films like Khiladi 786 repeat everything from the shot-takings to the sidekicks to such extent that in some years it would become difficult to differentiate one film from the other. But then who wants to be distinctive when you can thrive on mediocrity!

Khiladi 786 seems to be a conscious attempt by Akshay Kumar to regain his khiladi brand after more than a decade, especially in times when every other 'star' has designed himself as a larger-than-life 'player'. Also it seems to be a desperate attempt by Himesh Reshammiya to redeem himself in every possible way. As a co-producer, he not only subjects us to half a dozen nasal tracks at his own expense (pun intended) but we also have to endure him as an actor.

While his father runs a marriage bureau, Mansukh (Himesh Reshammiya) only ends up breaking matrimonies. And while Bahattar Singh (Akshay Kumar) seems to be the most eligible bachelor in Punjab, he gets no bride. When Mansukh is asked by an underworld don Tatya (Mithun Chakravarthy) to find a perfect match for his sister Indu (Asin), Bahattar seems to be the ideal choice. Hereafter the plot is a mishmash of several Akshay Kumar potboilers and its likes.

Like in Akki's Welcome, the don Tatya wants a reputed family for his sister. Bahattar comes with his family posing as cops, leading to a comedy of errors like in the Housefull series. The heroine is in love with another guy and the hero volunteers to get them together ala Namastey London. Chaos and commotion leads to a rushed and raucous wedding in the climax like in Salman Khan's (or should we say Asin) Ready. And if that wasn't enough Akshay Kumar doubles up in the end as a tribute to his recent Rowdy Rathore.

After the Deols and more recently Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar tries to cash in on the North Indian audience by carrying forward the Bollywood stereotype of the flamboyant Punjabi munda image. The characters are perpetually dressed in blaring and blinding colours and are nauseatingly noisy to deafening levels. Moreover every female in the family comes from a different nationality so much so that they can hold a UN conference within themselves.?

Certainly one doesn't expect too much of sensibility in such state-of-affairs but entertainment, one surely does expect. To its credit, the film starts off with a moderately manageable plot but after a while the makers have absolutely no clue on what to do with it. So the entire effort is put in glorifying the hero with stylised shots and signature punch-lines and even Akshay Kumar channelises his energy only in dance and action. Alas the entire exercise becomes so repetitive after a point that it loses its impact.

Talking about action, which is supposed to be the film's mainstay, the film doesn't even impress in that department. Actually the raw kick-and-punch stunt sequences of such films have become more clich?d than its comedy. Unfortunately action-directors show absolute disregard in choreographing anything original and the viewer is served with the same 'done-to-death' sequences. In fact like there was an era when cinema audiences used to take loo-breaks during songs, today people sink in their cell-phones when the action initiates.

Or in the climactic fight when the hero is scarred on face, the entire universe goes for a toss. Also the dialogues that vary from the silly to the witty variety, occasionally has its effect.

Akshay Kumar simply sleepwalks through his role. Comedy and action comes naturally to him and he doesn't have to try too hard. But exactly opposite is the case with Himesh Reshammiya. Even though he just has an extended special appearance in the film, he is unbearably bad. Extremely uncomfortable in comedy, Himesh is no Riteish Deshmukh or even a Tusshar Kapoor to play a comic sidekick to Akshay. Asin is plain average and there isn't much chemistry between the lead pair either. Mithun Chakravarthy is good as long as he lasts. But the film is so focused on Akshay Kumar that everyone else from Raj Babbar, Mukesh Rishi, Johnny Lever, Sanjay Mishra to standup comedians like Gurpreet Guggi and Bharti get no scope.
