'Mad Men' gets Rickrolled in viral video

By Joy Jernigan, TODAY

The entire "Mad Men" cast has been?Rickrolled!

For those unfamiliar with Internet memes, Rickrolling is a bait-and-switch practice in which a video redirects the viewer to Rick Astley?s 1987 hit single, "Never Gonna Give You Up," according to Know Your Meme, a website dedicated to?documenting Internet phenomena.

In this case, British comedian Richard Sandling?has set footage from the first four seasons of AMC's "Mad Men" to the hit tune, with the actors speaking the lyrics. Who knew they said the word "desert" so many times on the show?

Sandling, whose previous video "Tom Selleck's Moustache" was nominated for best mash-up video at Comedy Central's The Comedy Awards 2012, told TODAY that he collaborated on this project with two friends over a few months.

"I make all my work with two others, Mark and Gareth, and we have little money and lots of time on our hands," Sandling said. "We tend to watch an awful lot of TV shows in their entirety, in one go. We started working through 'Mad Men' and came to realize it could work with the Rick Astley song."

The video was made for Richard Sandling's Perfect Movie, a monthly standup comedy show about films at The Leicester Square Theatre in London, and has been viewed more than 169,000 times since Aug. 31.

"Mad Men," a stylized drama about the world of Madison Avenue advertising set in 1960s New York, has received 17 Emmy nominations, including outstanding drama series, outstanding lead actor in a drama series (Jon Hamm as Don Draper) and outstanding lead actress in a drama series (Elisabeth Moss as Peggy Olson).

The 64th Primetime Emmy Awards air Sunday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m. ET.
