Roanoke College employee recognized for exceptional work in career services

Salem, Va. - Toni McLawhorn, who is director of Career Services at Roanoke College, recently received a prestigious award in the collegiate career services profession.?

She received the Southern Star Award, which is one of the highest honors given each year by the Southern Association of Colleges and Employers (SoACE). With a membership of more than 500 college career services and corporate recruiting professionals, SoACE provides professional development and networking opportunities to help students across 15 southern states find jobs after college.

The Southern Star Award recognizes a professional for his or her outstanding contributions to the career services profession, society or SoACE. The recipient is nominated by members of SoACE and then selected by the Board of Directors.?

In Dec. 2012, McLawhorn was presented the Southern Star Award during SoACE's annual business meeting in Florida.

McLawhorn has worked in the career services profession for more than 21 years, and her attention to detail and willingness to help students made her the ideal candidate for the Southern Star Award.

"I truly enjoy my job at Roanoke, because it is very satisfying to help students and alumni achieve their goals," said McLawhorn, who came to Roanoke in 1991.

She has held several leadership positions within the SoACE, including president during the 2011-2012 academic year.

One of McLawhorn's ultimate goals is to become president of the National Association of Colleges and Employers.

In addition to the Southern Star Award, she has received several other awards for her work in career services, including the A. Isabel Gordon Distinguished Service Award, which is given by the Virginia Association of Colleges and Employers (VACE).
