I checked the "You Need a Budget" website and it looks pretty good. I use Excel. Whatever the software, just remember that the biggest task with budgeting is tracking your expenditures. I try to use debit and credit cards for as much as I can so that I have a digital record of what I am spending. I save most receipts for cash payments. And there is always a chunk of expenses that remain untracked. Investigate how well you can track your expenses before going too deep in to setting up a budget.

Fudge Spending

Why would that be so? Do you actually pay for things you can't identify, or do you consciously limit your tracking (e.g. "No point tracking $5 a day fed to the vending machine").

Just curious.

A.

Receipts are hard to come by in fast food places, must remember to ask. So we use 'Fudge Spending' category for cash amounts we can't remember.
We have 'ATM Cash' account setup to track cash in Quicken. DW balances the cash each month and I use 'Spending' report each month and paste it into spreadsheet. I like to see monthly averages and totals for different categories from year to year. And total spending amount is needed for LBYM.

I once went to a management class that talked about different personality types. I definitely was not in the category that included the people in Accounting. The trick to budgeting (and engineering) is to gather the data that answers the question you are asking.

Moneydance has an app I use on my iPhone. When I get gas or anything else and I have a few seconds to spare, I simply enter it in the app, which automatically syncs via Dropbox.

I do the same thing with YNAB. While the gas is pumping, I input everything except the total; when the pump stops, I input the total. Done. Syncs to my home computer via Dropbox.

Can I Dig A Basement Under A Ranch House? | Bankrate.com

Steve McLindenDear Real Estate Adviser,
I am looking at a raised ranch house, which unfortunately doesn't have a basement. I'd like to know if it makes sense to build a basement underneath or build an attached one. Or should I just be content to live with the ranch house like it is?
-- Krishna

Dear Krishna,
So you're looking for a third level of living space, eh? Raised ranch/descended basement?

A raised ranch home typically "raises the roof" of a conventional ranch design to create additional living space. This was a relatively popular construction style from the mid-1940s through the 1980s and was a little more common in rural communities than cities. A raised ranch home's bottom level, which generally features a garage, either sits at ground level or at slightly below grade and can serve as either a finished living area or quasi-basement.

These two-story homes were typically built with gable roofs and a flight of stairs at the main entrance that leads directly to the top living area. Some raised ranch homes were built into hills to a degree that the home's full size wasn't immediately evident from the curb. In fact, these remain particularly attractive to upwardly mobile Hobbits in Middle-earth. Oops. Sorry, wrong column.

Since the foundation in your average raised ranch home is typically a slab, digging a basement underneath could be prohibitively expensive, though possible. After all, just about any structure can be underpinned to allow digging below. But there is more involved here than just jacking up the house and digging. There would be rewiring, re-venting, re-piping, damp-proofing and many other aspects that would need to be addressed, plus you may face potential issues such as broken windows from the house resettling. Flooding complications can arise from soil instability, neighborhood drainage paths or a high water table. Plus, building codes in many areas require windows and emergency egress in any new basement construction.

Talk with a few contractors, and you'll get a pretty good picture of the job's complexities. It's evident that such jobs can cost up to half as much as a house is worth. If you think that's an exaggeration, read accounts in various online forums of folks who literally got in too deep in such projects. These are definitely not for the do-it-yourselfers unless you are a skilled builder.

For less money, you could build a small above-ground addition with a modest-size basement (assuming the soil allows it) and not have to tear into the original foundation. The above-ground component would also add resale value to your home while the basement under the current structure wouldn't. Plus, a project dug behind the house wouldn't necessitate you finding temporary digs when the real dirty work ensues, unlike a subterranean one.

Only you can answer the question of whether you should "just be content" to live with the home as it is, though I suspect your bank account will have a say. Whatever you plan, interview three contractors and vet them thoroughly. Oh, and whatever your budget is, account for 10 percent to 20 percent in unexpected additional costs.

Happy ranching!

Philips highlights urgent need to unlock potential of energy - AME Info

"LED lighting is a technology innovation that enhances efficiency and brings substantial savings. These savings can potentially be re-invested in cities and new infrastructures, thus enabling sustainable growth," said Eric Rondolat, CEO Philips Lighting.

A full switch-over to energy efficient LED lighting would provide significant energy savings that equal a reduction in the need for 640 medium-sized power plants and cost savings of approximately EUR130bn.

Christiana Figueres, the UNFCCC Executive Secretary said: "Energy efficiency measures hold enormous potential not just to make a significant contribution to curb global greenhouse gas emissions, but to cut energy bills for consumers and businesses, support green jobs and enterprises, and boost economies. In collaboration with key stakeholders including business and industry, governments need to step up measures that promote behavioural change and drive energy efficiency improvements across all sectors."

A report from leading energy consultancy Ecofys titled: "The benefits of energy efficiency: why wait?" is being published at the global Climate Change Conference in Doha (COP18) in partnership with Philips. The report aims to estimate the scale of the benefits of energy efficiency, based on assessments from the most authoritative organizations in this field.

The report highlights that improving the efficiency of general electricity use by an additional 1-2% per year is equivalent to the production of 2,500 to 5,000 medium-sized power plants. This would reduce the need for capital investments in public energy infrastructure in the range of EUR1000 - 1900bn by 2030, providing medium-term budget relief during a period of difficult economic conditions.

The report also estimates the scale of other benefits of energy efficiency such as cost savings through lower energy bills, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Dr. Kandeh Yumkella, the UN Secretary-General's designated Special Representative for Sustainable Energy for All, added: "Strengthening energy efficiency provides a twin-win for both the climate and the economy. It is one of the most powerful, cost-effective tools available to help meet our climate goals while also saving money for governments, businesses and consumers alike. Energy efficiency is essential for making sustainable energy for all a reality."

As part of its role during the conference, Philips will be advocating for the next level of action and embracing initiatives which contribute to staying within the 2?C limit for climate change.

Norway princess secretly travels to India to play nanny

OSLO (Reuters) - Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit secretly traveled to India in order to care for infant twins born to the surrogate mother of a gay palace employee unable to get a travel visa, the palace said on Monday.

Armed with a diplomatic passport that granted her immediate access, the future queen jumped on a plane in late October when the employee, who is also a friend, and his husband were unable to travel to care for their newborns.

"For me, this is about two babies lying alone in a New Delhi hospital," Mette-Marit said in a statement. "I was able to travel and wanted to do what I could."

She did not alert Indian authorities and spent several days with the babies at the Manav Medicare Centre, where staff assumed the wife of Norway's Crown Prince Haakon was a nanny.

While the princess was away, her name continued to appear in the official palace calendar and her absence from a parliamentary dinner was not explained.

A relative of the two fathers eventually took over from Mette-Marit and the fathers received a visa in November, when they brought the babies back to Norway, the palace added.

Surrogacy is a hotly debated issue in Norway and the government discourages Norwegians from paying surrogate parents for children.

Protestant Norway was the second country in the world in 1993 to register same sex partnerships while same sex marriage has been legal since 2009.

The Crown Princess acknowledged the debate and insisted she is not taking a side and only did what a friend had to do.

"Sometimes life presents you with situations with few good solutions. This was one of those," she said. "There is an important debate going on about surrogacy and this was not meant as taking a side."

More on Kids and the Biz | Your New Hollywood: You Get it! Got it ...

Welcome Back,

Molly Ringwald, Rodney Allen Rippy, Ke Huy Quan, Shirley Temple, Quvenzhan? Wallis and Ayush Mahesh Khedekar

This week we continue our conversation with entertainment attorney, Diane Krausz, regarding children who work in the entertainment industry and child labor laws. Now more than ever, this seems to be a timely subject. Over the course of the past few weeks a number of events regarding minors and the industry have surfaced in the news. We?re not going to focus on those stories, but all signs are pointing to parents and guardians and the need to be even more familiar with child labor laws and Part 186.

Enjoy!

kukurorpuri: Soccer Goalkeeping Tips ? Recreation and Sports

The goalkeeper?s job is definitely the toughest of all soccer players. Even though a defender, midfielder or attacker can get off with a few blunders once in a while, a goal keeper?s blunders really are a lot more noticeable. To complicate things even further, modern goalkeepers have a whole lot more attributions than before. They need to coordinate the defense. They quite often have to work as sweepers, and they are able to fire off lethal counter attacks immediately after a clean save.

1 Versus 1 is a very popular routine. That being said, it?s very effective given that goal keepers are bound to become caught in a one on one challenge against an opposing attacker in practically every single game. Add to that, at beginner or youth levels, in which defenses are less demanding than they are with the professionals, 1-on-1s are quite typical for goalkeepers. You need to train them properly.

Ab Volley is one of the toughest goal keeping drills. If executed correctly, it?s an extremely effective one. Here?s how it goes: your goalie must remain on his bottom, in the very same position he?d do ab situps in. You or a teammate will need to throw the ball towards him and while he?s doing ab situps, he will pass it back to you. To speed things up a little, you can have an additional group of 8-10 players behind the goal, returning the balls back to the firing squad.

Automatic Fire. Have 8-10 players stand at about twenty to thirty yards from the goal, each with his or her own ball. At your signal, the attackers must, 1 by 1, run forward and kick the ball from a distance you specified earlier. Your goal keeper must be under a constant rain of shots, jumping from one particular post to the other to save the ball. It is not really that essential if he saves them or not, it is crucial that he understands the way to react rapidly and get up from the floor fast and be prepared for an additional shot.
